Ok, so I've spent about an hour pointlessly googling and searching to no avail.
I have an 05 TJ Wrangler with a 6 speed gearbox.
I want to change the gearbox oil, can anyone tell me what the hell I should be using, I've now probably read that every possible type 'can' be used but obviously that's not the case.
Some people say 10/30W normal engine oil is a GOOD replacement for the OEM stuff, sounds absurd but if it's true it will save quite a bit of money sooooo.......
I live in Brisbane, I wheel pretty regularly, I have lockers, I have 35's, can someone tell me the following.
Thanks in advance, I'm leaving towards a normal EPX80/90 for g-box, DXIII for t-case and EPX80/90 for diffs, I think I saw in the book at Repco to use a Sin 140 that was like $75 for a litre or something ridiculous for g-box. Don't really want to do that if it isn't necessary.
I did research a couple of weeks ago for my NV3550 (5spd) and came up with Royal purple synchromax, apparently it has to be frienly to the brass synchro bushings (something crap like that anyway).... the link is the cheapest I could find it in Aus.still gonna cost $75 + delivery
Mate . . . what's it say in the vehicle hand book in relation to oil spec? If you want to PM me with that, I can probably figure out what is best (I used to work in Castrol Technical Services).
Rest are easy:
Engine: Edge 5 / 30 (I'm running Edge 0/40 in my Cherro)
Diffs: I'm using SAF-XA (sure, it's pricey. But, it's what a lot of the V8 Supercars use . . . what's it worth to look after the diff?). Though, you might get by with EPX 80 / 90 in the front.
T'fer case: Again . . . need the spec.
You can bet that pretty much any of the major refiners will have a product for those applications (of slightly varying quality). But, the chances are also excellent that few of them wanted to fork out the $$$ to obtain the 'type approval' -- or OK tick -- from Chrysler Jeep.

Synchromax is fully compatible with all types of friction materials and offers excellent corrosion and oxidation protection without affecting the soft metals commonly found in manual transmission synchronizers.
Correct me if Im wrong, but,
Find another oil that claims to protect soft metals (brass synchros)
I'm getting s,max
So is the definitive answer here, 'DO NOT go to my local auto store, look in the oil book and buy what it says suits a TJ 05 Wrangler'
?
I personally would not I tried with top of the line redline and royal purple oils and they were terable. I have the part number in my garage I'll try get it tomorrow. If I don't post it up private message to remind me. I get mine through Tynans in sydney
