Having found that it's next to impossible to mount accessory switches into the dash of JK, I decided to make up a switch mount for four Carling/ARB style rocker switches, located where I could have a chance of actually seeing and operating the switches.
Decided to mount them in a commercially made switch holder....on the RH side of the dash, over the area between the speaker grill and the upper dash air vent pod.
1. Using cardboard, knock up a pattern to test my dimensions....see how it looks.
2. transfer the pattern to sheet alloy.....cut it out, file and fold to shape. Epoxy the switch mounting into the alloy piece.
3. paint the alloy mount, and fit it to the dash with four small screws, washers and nuts. Mounts very firmly, plenty of room for access at the rear with the dash side cover removed. Drilled two larger (aprox 1cm) holes into the dash face at the rear of the mounting for wiring pass-throughs.
Switches are just temporarily sitting in the mount until I get some electrical work done.
They clear everything, you don't get close with your knee sitting, entering or leaving the car.
I think maybe about 3 hours total time from initial thoughts to finished....not including waiting for the paint/epoxy to dry.
