I think the soft roader tag comes down to perceived durability and ability to withstand offroad abuse.
A patrol for example is going to withstand much more abuse than a kl even though from all reports a stock kl trailhawk may even be better off road.
I generally hate using the word tough but many people would.
I personally think a vehicle requires low range and a locking centre diff or traditional transfer case before its even considered not being a soft roader.

Look at this way,a soft roader that is capable of some serious cross country adventure. It's relatively easy to build a 'true' off roader, just a matter of loading it with the necessary equipment, great as a daily is something else again, a whole different challenge for the manufacturer.

Price.
The GC sold really well because they were an alternative to a prado for a lot less coin.
The Cherokee competes with the Rav4, Tiguan, Kia Sportage and plenty more...all of them significantly cheaper.

The flippant answer is that for yer average Aussie anything smaller than a troopy is a Shiela car...
In real terms, here vs the USA a larger machine with long legs has better utility here - if that's not the reality then it's certainly the perception. For example in Mount Isa among late model vehicles there are probably almost as many GC's as Landcruisers - but afaik there might be TWO KL Cherokees... I've seen quite a few KL's in Cairns tho - we went to dinner in town when we were over there in February and saw 4 of them in parking bays during a 2 block walk in the cbd - as well as having seen at least a few of them about on the road during the day driving around the place.
