too late rusty I got the goodies and in the outback I don't think I could look around ...... never the less I got my parts now just need $$$ for the mechanics

control arm bushes and rear rubbers next that's everything is new except for paint .................

All good. Head gaskets on these robust motors is not hard. The rear most head bolt needs to be lifted out with the head. I usually use a short piece of garden hose to space it up. Electrical tape will do. Dress both surfaces and your good to go. Push rods come out before head removal. You can do it.

Oh. And keep everything in order. I usually put the rockers in order in the valve cover. Use a piece of card board with holes in it for everything else.

whats the general advice with guides, valves, seats & springs on these heads ?
by 380k a lot of engines need these items replaced or machined

I would be surprised if the valve guides, valve seats and faces didn't need some love at 380,000 kms

I always send my heads to a machine shop after removal. I have only sent 4 litre heads to the shop with less than 220k on them and the valve seats, faces and guides have still been good.
They say the head bolts can be reused twice.
