I think those results are pretty much what everyone here has ..

I love the petrol because its got plenty of go but I think the fuel economy is a real killer.. Depends what you want.. whenever any of my mates want something towed they call me and the petrol handles it with great ease.

I think its a real personal choice I think the guys here with petrol XJ's would buy petrol again and the guys with diesel XJ's would buy diesel again, am I right guys?

I'd have a diesel/auto in an XJ now if it was available....looks like it'll be a couple of years before the diesel/auto Laredo ends up in my garage tho'!
I won't buy a diesel/auto KJ, either!

...and as I was saying before I wandered off on the diesel/auto stream...

If you want a manual then you have no choice as the XJ manuals are all diesels and the petrol are all autos...in Oz, anyway.

I've been happy with my two XJ's on petrol and love the on-road performance, blitzing most traffic light grand prix starts especially in full-time 4wd in wet or slippery conditions. They are more than adequate off-road with plenty of grunt in a relatively light weight vehicle.

There is also a vast supply of accessories available for XJ's, petrol or diesel, tho' snorkels for diesels are a bit scarce, but there are a huge range of suspension and mechanical options that you can consider.

My only criticism of my two petrol engines is that they have both been prone to cooling problems... and I even stay away from the mud these days, yet it still overheats on long climbs in low range. Melted my trick bonnet vents last time.(yes Marcus, you were right...will have to spend another $13.95 and replace them! )

A couple of MJOC members drive diesel XJ's and are basically very happy with them, especially off-road. Incidentally, the diesels do not allow full-time 4wd on the asphalt, they have the same transfer case as Wranglers.

Choice is yours, Brandon! Good luck! :D

Yeah well I would like a Diesel but not sure, don't want to get one that has issues soon after buying and costing me a fortune to fix!! I am a bit dubious about them being a 2.5ltr too!! thinking its a bit small and therfor need to work harder?? will give them both a test drive and see what I think:) thanks heaps for everyone who gave me thier thoughts. Apprciated :D

my hilux was a 2.4 turbo which was modified. was very impressed with the power. put a turbo in there on a diesel and with the size of a cherro you wont have any worries, the patrols have the big diesels but way more than a tonne over the cherro.

Thanks Jimmyb!! My dads Cruiser is a 4.2TD which has pleanty of GO but WAY OVER my budget! I think from what I have heard both seam to have thier advantages and disadvantages so what I will do is test drive a couple and see what I think in the drivers seat.
