As we all know the handbreak on the TJ just does not really work that well.
I was told by a relaible source that if you break hard while reversing it automatically adjusts the rear drums. this keeps the break pedal hard and the hand break works! so adjust the rear drums and then every day/week just reverse hard and break harder. it seems to be working for me.
Jeeps do have "self-adjusting" rear drums. They work by using a little cable that winds the adjuster when the rear brake shoe moves too far when reversing. One of the reasons 4 wheel disks are so popular is that self-adjusters often don't, or worse, only one works so you get one side nice and tight while the other hardly works at all.
Best to manually adjust every 5k. Then you can be sure both rear drums are adjusted okay.
