What Jeep do I drive?: TJ
Default Strange noises

Quick Quiz - when I drive down the road, I hear a knocking noise, and vibrations. only does this at speed (60+ kmh) what might this be? wheel bearings?, Transfer Case Bearings, Diff bearings?

I think it might be the rear wheel bearings, my mechanic is hiding from me, so he's no help.

this is a fairly old vehicle (early 1980's) so all of the above components are well worn in, and loose, what is it MOST LIKELY to be.

hmmm well bearings tend to give you a howling or growling noise.
I'd try checking your propsharft and unijoints. One easy way to do this is with the vehicle WELL CHOKED and out of gear get under it and give the prosharft a good shaking and see if you can detect any slop at the unijoints and/or the splined slipjoint. If all is well non at the unijoints and sweet FA at the spline.
And while your at it check for any signs of damage to the propsharft, bent, lost weight etc...
I guess some of the crew will come up with a few more ideas for you.

"all is well non at the unijoints and sweet FA at the spline. " one uni was F@cked well and truly, fixed that, no probs. my real problem is that Zook is different from Tojo stuff I'm used to, lack of service manual is KILLING me. Can't even figure how to remove the rear axles (non floating I think)

Dodgy,

Check the rear pinion bearing.

What is the nominal operating angle of the rear driveshaft?

If it was a TJ I'd say the upper sway bar joints...

otherwise look at uni's and shock mounts, suspension bushes and the spring U bolts onto the axle
