spare tyre on roofracks - good idea?
anyone got any feedback on this and how they did it properly ?
its a bit of weight and im sure it would be messy if it came off under hard braking. Do people just use heavy duty straps (ratchet kind)
when the time comes from 31"s i dont really wanna rest it on the floor as i carry the dog often not to mention shopping. And a spare carrier is more $$$$

Mopar do a spare tyre carrier for the roof. I've got one, and carry a 32' Mongrel on it when out bush, it has been ok until recently when I was out on quite a lot of corrigations, and I developed a very annoying sqweak/ rattle.
I'm pulled the rail off and it appears that the torx screws that hold it in have come loose in the roof, now i have to pull of the roof lining to fix it somehow.
You're right, there is a lot of weight being thrown around on top of the car. Maybe my 32' is too big for it, but who know.
However this little hiccup has deterred me. I like it up there out of the way. You're pushing for room in the back of the chero as it is!
cheers

I strap it onto the roofracks when I need the space...but I find with the 31s on when the spare is on the roof, the two factors combined causes quite an increase in fuel consumption, as the wind resistance is just enough to make the jeep go back into 3rd when cruising up pretty gradual slopes on the highway, and it hunts between the gears quite a bit...

optical, since i recently decided to toss the 33 spare and use a 35 spare i have been strapping it to my roofracks.
Just did 2 weeks in tassie with no real problems, just made sure i re-tightened it every couple of days.

i've got the genuine Jeep roof mounted one. Bought it from Brighton Jeep and only cost $150. Does the job just have to check the bolts every now and then. cheaper than a swing-away and not in the way all the time
