KJ Snorkel
Hi all,
I passed a Hyundai Terracan the other day on the road and noticed it had a snorkel. A Hyundai Terracan!!! Yet there is still no commercially available one for the KJ...NOW THAT IS A TRUE INJUSTICE.
Safari still have no plans for one according to my latest request (yesterday).
Wonder how long we will have to wait? Maybe a little pressure from the rapidly growing KJ fraternity might help?
Just a thought...
Gos.

I think (and I could be wrong here) that Safari are a bit lazy!
I believe that once upon a time the diesel XJ boys didn't have a Safari snorkel. So one of them worked out which existing snorkel was the closest fit, worked out how to convert it to the diesel XJ, told Safari about it, and hey-presto a diesel XJ Safari snorkel becomes available!
Probably they're waiting for someone in the KJ gang to do the same thing. There's a 5 page thread (and other miscellaneous threads) on the LOST board in the US about this. It seems that the old Toyota Tacoma (I don't even know what that is!) snorkel is the closest fit. It just takes someone with the balls enough to cut a big hole in the side of their Jeep to try it!

Yeah, seen that one. Not keen I'm afraid.
Plus, his approach angle is gonna suck with that winch and bar where it is, isn't it? Not to mention that the winch is in a prime place to get stuffed up with mud and things.

Looks weird, why is the snorkel head so low? It looks like it has taken some sort of beating there...

I think the big problem with the KJ is that the A pillar is actually part of the door isn't it? So there really isnt anywhere to bolt it to when going up the windscreen side.

D'oh!
Oh well, the theory's still sound! Get a snorkel from Airflow and/or Safari and make it fit. Then tell them about it.

Well, yeah the door kind of wraps round the A pillar a bit, but judging from this pic, the mount goes "up" into the A pillar from behind the door seal rubber, so I think that would work for the KJ too. There might be a bit of bending needed, but I think it'd fit;

Yeah, it's the XJ diesel in the article Kyro pointed us at. I was just trying to say that the A pillar mount is a pretty thin bit of metal, so the fact that the door wraps around the A pillar on a KJ shouldn't stop a snorkel being mounted there.

There is at least some straight edged lip there on an XJ tho. Hey it'd be great if they made one but i am just saying really that it would be pretty tricky.

Better get this story straight as Airflow didn't just start to sell them because someone told them what would work. I went down to their factory and they worked with me as I tried all their snorkels to see what would fit. Made up a cutting template and then got Roger here to try one out before they marketed the kit. The factory was involved from day one not just an after thought later.

Err, yeah. Mine was the romanticised version!
I guess if someone's willing to put in the time to help develop one for the KJ then the factory would be willing to help?

Am I? Where's the factory?
I'm more than willing to spend time fooling around with bits of rubber and bendy tubes and having holes cut in the side of my KJ. But I'm no engineer so it might end up a bit more Heath Robinson (or Rube Goldberg if you're American) than Expedition Quality!
Gojeep, do you have a contact at the factory who'd be able to help us out?

I can set you up with the factory ( they are in Dromana ) and can try a heap of snorkels without having to cut anything. They have a bunch hanging on the wall for when they made the templates for them originally which means the part that normally goes through the guard is removed. So you can lay them against the guard to you hearts content and see how they look and fit.

If there is a kit made, there will be at least 1 purchase guaranteed over here in the west.

Hey maybe if we put a list together of all those willing to pay "money" (the magic word) for a snorkel, the factory might be a little more inclined to get moving on this.
We could enlist the help of the L.O.S.T forum and others in the states to boost numbers??

Ok so whats the go?? It appears that you can get a snorkel for a hi-undy but you cant get it for a Jeep. Now thats a contradiction in terms... surely. Well its my rdo tomorrow & I think im going to start making some phone calls. ARB first off, then safari then that other mob airsomethingorother. then after having no joy with them Im going to shop around, the guys at Opp lock in Balcatta (for you locals) seem to get into the aftermarket not the run of the mill stuff, but I will give the boys at Northern the option to avago (if they want it) as they are my preferred workshop & they have a couple of masterjeep techs working there.

OK, just got off the phone with Airflow and they have a new machine which will speed up the mould making process. They are happy to make a brand new from scratch snorkel for the KJ. They just need a KJ at their Dromana factory for a full day to take the information they need and then later on a couple of days to check the fit and make the installation instructions etc. You will get to keep the snorkel at the end of it for free.
So who will be up for that as cant do anymore for you guys than that.
