Replacing a radio/cassette player with a CD/MP3 player

Gidday everyone,

I am thinking of replacing the old radio/cassette player in my '95 XJ with a CD/MP3 player. Has anyone tackled this before? I am particularly interested to know:

1. Will a CD player fit? I understand that CD players are deeper than radio/cassette players (due to the diameter of the disc).
2. How do you remove the old unit?
3. Do you need to remove the dash?
4. What are the colour codings on the wiring?
5. Does the existing harness use RCA plugs (which I think are commonly used on generic CD players)
6. Any other traps for the inexperienced player?

That looks like a post-97 model. My old 1995 truck is different.

mine is a 96 and there's no way i can fit a rail in there. i'm thinking about attaching some brackets to keep the hu in place.
too bad my vacation only starts in mid july. but i will document it, for further reference.
EDIT : i'm going in the garrage to take some pics of the stock wiring harness and write down the color code.

From Memory, removing the fascia, undoing 2 screws and 2 plugs and the std head is out.
You will need to remove the mounting bracket of the stock unit and attach to the new one, buy a harness plug/adapter and you should be good to plug and play.
Most newer heads will use 2 rectangular din? plugs for power speakers, etc, Jeep have their own std. that wont go into anything else.
There wont be any RCAs for output to an amp on the stock h/u there will likely be on the new one, if you plan on upgrading later, put the RCA cable and the amp remote wire in now and save your self the drama later.
Its pretty straight forward take ya time and give youself a saturday arvo to do it the first time round.
