Cheers for your thoughts guys.
I was hoping one problem leads to another. I have seen bad dash earths cause weird things in XJ's like rear wipers coming on etc. I have a mate coming over tomorrow to help me look further into this.
Any comments or advice is welcome.

just be thankful it doesnt trip the immobilizer. i havent had this issue for a while now but my tacho and speedo would die while driving, if i jabbed the brakes they would come back on. every now and then i would turn the car on with the immobilizer light on and wouldnt be able to start the car. banging the dash seemed to resolve the issue though.

I had a very similar issue a few years back Rustynuts. Turned out to be the alternator.

Regards

Feeling your pain Billnick. I have been all but Jeepless for almost 2 & 1/2 years..... All I have is a few bits and a wheeless and axleless piece of metal sitting on the boundary of mine and my neighbors block.... I would love another XJ but not sure if I could bring myself to get another given all the issues it will most likely have. Unless I get lucky and find one that someone else has already sorted.... Price also has to be right.... Unfortunatley for the last two and a bit years I have been carless because I can't find anything at all in the right price....

Hi Anthony. I didn't last long, I got myself a '04 KJ, a little 2.4l petrol. I was over automatics and thirsty sixes and this little KJ suits me nicely. Runs cool, drives straight, gets 10l/100km.

We'll, I'm in Jeep purgatory, at the moment.
Still have momentos, to hang in the shed😁.
Be on the hunt soon, for a flat fender, CJ2 or 3.

A little update on my electrical woes.
I tried a new cluster and the fuel guage went to 3/4 where I thought it should be but in about 10 seconds slowly fell to zero. The tach never moved. I get an error code stating "fuel level sensor voltage high". I clear the code and it keeps reappearing.
Now I quickly plugged in a mates cluster and it worked! We only had it plugged in for a few seconds because if my car had blown up two clusters I didn't want to damage his one. My clusters in his car don't work with the fuel gauge, speedo or tach. I think my chances of having two bad clusters with the same problem is remote. I am tending to think the problem is within the fuel level sensor. The car runs and starts fine.
Does anyone know what the wire colours/pinouts are at the plug before the fuel tank? I can't seem to find it in the FSM.
Thanks Rusty.
