What Jeep do I drive?: XJ
Default XJ diesel engine swap

Hi all.
My name is Evert. I just bought an XJ Cherokee 2.5 liter turbo diesel. Unfortunatly 10 km after the purchase was done and I drove away I blew the cylinder head gasket. I now have two options, get the gasket fixed for a few thousand dollars or get a new engine.
Has anyone ever put a new diesel engine in an XJ? I currently have a VM Motori turbodiesel I4 425 OHC in it (as it was sold in Australia)
Does anybody have some experience with putting in a VM Motori turbodiesel I4 R425 DOHC or a VM Motori turbodiesel I4 R428 DOHC? These are the engines from later Jeeps.

425 OHV
2.5 L (2499 cc) I4, with two (pushrod-actuated) valves-per-cylinder and indirect fuel injection.

Applications:

1990–1999 Rover 800 (power: 118 bhp, latterly 120 bhp; torque: 197 ft•lbf)
1992–2000 Chrysler Voyager (power: 114 hp (85 kW); torque: 193 ft•lbf (262 N m))
1994–2001 Jeep Cherokee (power: 118 hp (88 kW) @ 4000 rpm; torque: 221 ft•lbf (300 N m) @ 2000 rpm)
1995–1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee (power: 114 hp (85 kW); torque: 221 ft•lbf (300 N m))
1996–2000 GAZ GAZelle (power: 101 hp (75 kW); torque: 171 ft•lbf (232 N m))
1997–2000 UAZ 3160 (power: 101 hp (75 kW); torque: 171 ft•lbf (232 N m))
1999–2000 Dodge Dakota (power: 114 hp (85 kW); torque: 221 ft•lbf (300 N m))

R 425 DOHC
2.5 L (2499 cc) I4, with four valves-per-cylinder and common-rail direct fuel injection.

Applications:

2001–present Chrysler Voyager Manual (power: 141 hp (105 kW); torque: 251 ft•lbf (340 N m))
2002–2004 Jeep Cherokee (power: 141 hp (105 kW); torque: 251 ft•lbf (340 N m))
LDV Maxus http://ldv.com (power: 118 hp (88 kW) @ 4000 rpm; torque: 221 ft•lbf (300 N m) @ 2000 rpm)
A de-rated version of this engine putting out 100 hp was chosen in 2006 to power the new generation of the iconic London Taxi

R 428 DOHC
R 425 DOHC enlarged to 2.8 L (2766 cc) displacement.

Applications:

2001–present Chrysler Voyager Automatic (power: 150 hp (110 kW); torque: 251 ft•lbf (360 Nm))
2001–2004 Jeep Cherokee/Liberty (power: 150 hp (110 kW); torque: 251 ft•lbf (360 Nm)). Only in Europe
2005–2007 Jeep Cherokee/Liberty (power: 163 hp (120 kW); torque: 295 ft•lbf (400 Nm))
2008–present (mod. RA 428 DOHC) Jeep Cherokee/Liberty (power: 177 hp (130 kW); torque: 302/339 ft•lbf (410/460 Nm))
2004–present BMC Megastar (power: 127 hp (95 kW); torque: 184 ft•lbf (250 Nm))
2007–present (mod. RA 428 DOHC) Dodge Nitro (power: 177 hp (130 kW); torque: 302/339 ft•lbf (410/460 Nm))
2007–present (mod. RA 428 DOHC) Jeep Wrangler (power: 177 hp (130 kW); torque: 302 ft•lbf (410 Nm))

Any help is greaty appreciated as I want to get my Jeep on the road.

Thanks
Evert

Hey mate, I did. I rang him up, but he just told me that as I bought the car it is now my problem. Talk about getting ripped off, I'm sure he knew about the problem before he sold the car to me.
The only thing I can do now is try and fix the car.

Id reckon you should contact the fair trading department & see if youve got any options, as far as I know its illegal to sell a vehicle with a known fault w/out disclosing fault, even for private sales.

Failing that, I reckon youd be better of looking at early-mid 90s pajero diesel engine ,they are a good motor & can be picked up for much more reasonable price.Any later model diesels ,especially VM, are gunna cost big$$.
Furthermore, the mitsi t/case is on same side so you could use trans & t/case therefore avoiding adapter plates etc.

Too bad the pictures in the first link are gone

I'm thinking about starting to save up for a 2.5CRD out of a Liberty... They should be easy to find where I am.
