What Jeep do I drive?: XJ
Default My Jeep became a prius

Yer so pretty much what happened was i went thought a SMALL poodle and some water splashed into the engine bay, and when i stopped i suddenly found out that the hole car was LIVE? the only bit you could touch was the outside of the body, if you touched the inside of the door's or the plug going from my uhf's mic or if u touched any other part of the car that conducts electricity. i was told to turn the car on and leave it runing for a while and just hope that the water would dry up as the wire got hot?

after doing this it seemed to be fine.

does anyone know what the hell happened or were the short curcit may have happened

so you drove through a small poodle

what do you mean by live?

Did you just touch the mic and the door as you were getting out and got a bit of a shock?. Probably just abit of static.
Its not really possible for a short circuit to cause the mic and inside of the door to become "live" at a high enough voltage to give you a shock.

The only place you'll get a high enough voltage to feel it is at the coil or a dodgey plug lead, if you could get you're tongue across the battery you'd feel that as well though but you wont get a voltage hit by just touching the two terminals at the same time which is what a short is doing. Does sound like static shock to me.

Cheers
Steve

hey mate it wasnt static i ended up getting the boonet open and the inside of the engine bay was live (you touch it you get an electric shock) and also the little arm that holds the hood up was live as well, also when you tryed to open the boot you got shocked and also when i started the car though the key.

A small poodle eh?

Do we need to call the RSPCA?

If you're dry 12v is not really going to be all that noticable, have you got an inverter mounted in the vehicle anywhere or as Steve suggested it could be ignition related but I would also suggest having a real good look at your grounds....

Hey mate, it really was a small puddle but most of just splashed up underneath the bonnet on the started motor side.

the only thing that i have ever changed in the car is put lights, uhf, and stereo.
and all of this is grounded were the point the batt goes to and the other amp in the back is ground to a bolt that goes straight to the floor ?

Well the plot or is it PLOOT thickens...
The starter motor side is also where the dissy is located so it is looking more like an ignition issue but the alt and the battery is there as well so forget grounds on your stereo and check the grounds under the bonnet as well as your coil etc...
Where abouts are you located?

yer like it scared the shit out of me and the people i was with, i had a look at the grounds on the stereo and everything seems to be fine, but sorry im not the most car smart guy but im trying to learn, what do you mean coil?

i was lucky to have a guy that works for TJM that came out 4wding with me that day and he said that just start the car and soon enough the wire's will try out etc and it will be fine. so i did this and drove around scared shitless trying not to touch anything that will zap me and well it finally dried out and it was ok. but im scared of this happening again.

and im located in caboolture.

He means the ignition coil. its what provides the voltage to make the ignition spark in the engine. Its a much higher voltage to all the other electrical circuits in the car.

Maybe the engine earth strap? If the engine wasnt grounded, ignition coil may charge up the engine enough for it to shock you. It could than feedback thorugh other systems to things like the key?

Ignition coils are up around 50,000v so if there is an issue with it then that can cause a problem.
I am on the southside, if you want it looked at, Pm me...

I am pretty sure a 12v capacitor will cause any dramas as they have less "power" than a battery and discharge very quickly...
