Is it possible to swp over my rear diff on my XJ turbo diesel (dana 35, stock ratio?) for a dana 44HD diff off a jeep grand cherokee WG (3.73:1 Diff Ratio
)? it'd be good to have a strong diff
besides the grand having disc brakes and coil suspension, what else must be changed? or could i just swap over the housings and axles? i dont know much about differentials... o
thanks in advance for any help... i need it to get the jeep back on th road:???:

I believe that is the Aluminum diff?
you may be better with a Chrysler 8.25 in terms of simplicity (= cost) & strength, of course the 8.25 is a c-clip axle where I believe the 44 hd is not.

The 44HD does not have a lot of aftermarket support and I'm not sure it is the correct width for the XJ either. As already said it has an aluminium center as well. You'd be much better off getting a D44 from a TJ as it is a direct bolt in once the brackets are changed on it (you'd have to regear it to match as well but the 44HD would need that as well). If you want a true bolt in get a 8.25 from an XJ, harder to find and a bit more expensive than a D44 but just bolt it straight in no regearing needed.

OKay, i didnt know it was aluminum diff. I'd love to get my hands on a 8.25, ive heard alot of good thing about them
is there a difference between the xj petrol and diesel diffs in gear/ratios? or are they interchangeable? especially the dana 35 as it looks like that all ill be able to afford at the moment
thanks for the replies

Diesel has 3.73 ratios and Petrol has 3.55 so yep a difference. Should be pretty easy to find a petrol D35 for under $100 most that upgrade pretty much give them away.

Nup, definatley 3.73. The 4.11 was in some 4 cylinder XJ's in the UK and US.

Only diesels models with 4.11 are 2.1 TD's. Not sure which petrol models got 4.11's

I have a 3.73 Zg diff here at the moment if you're interested, it is coil spring but it is just a matter of swapping the brackets over which I can supply, it doesn't come with the discs or axles though....

One of my mates has an imported (into Australia) UK XJ with the 4 cylinder petrol 4.11 ratios and a 8.25 rear diff. All stock apparentley, so they're out there :) I think it is a tow pack 4 cylinder.
