hey all. i heard on the grapevine that u can use a commodore thermo fan (from a vt upwards i think), and all is needed is a small bracket modification. if this is true, whats the cfm of this fan and most importantly, can it be done?

found this while surfing http://www.dirtboundoffroad.com/featured/xj-%E2%80%93-electric-fan-conversion-kit/ . have any of you guys heard of this mob? the idea sounds pretty bloody good. reason i'm hunting around is that stock fan and the second hand perma cool electric fan are nearly on the way out. i figure spending $340 including delivery with a fan controller would be more justifiable than to source 2 new fans. input?

dunno, i will measure the one on my VY.

the same fans keep the LS1 v8 cool (same cooling system as the 6), so i see no problem personally

1,300 CFM from a 10" fan that costs peanuts???? Bit of an inflated figure I think. I was quoted $600 for a single 1800CFM from Repco. Having said that the setup looks good.

I like the look of that kit, but how good are they? someone must be running the same or similar setup.

if you have a look on ebay USA they have ZIRGO 16" 3000 CFM Radiator Fan street rod 12v ZFB16S which looks really good for the price

Hmm that dirtbound conversion looks pretty sweet - do like the idea of better cooling at slow speeds

done a bit more research on those fans and i'm not too keen on the idea of the fan dividers being so close to the radiator. could start to slice them from vibes from the fans. bought a vt dual fan from wreckers today. will try an install. the thickness is about the same as stock and the overall area is a bit smaller than the radiator so should cover just nicely. see how i go.

well that install didn't work out. steering box in the way. have been surfing trying to find a new 16" fan. found a few but don't know about the quality of the fans and wanted your input. deciding between zirgo, be cool and derale. all pump out over 2000 cfm. all on summit racing.

Gojeeps taurus fan does nothing for you?
Remember you can turn it on its side so it covers the whole radator with the single fan if you do not want to do the trany cooler mod as well.

I reckon I will be going the Dirtbound route. Max tested his fans here (http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=1057920).

what have you got jj?

I have a 16" fan like Gojeep's original fan mod but I run my stock fan all the time in combo with the bigger one so it get air flow across the whole radiator all the time just in a hi-lo arrangement...

If I can find a link of the type I bought off ebay I will post it up, as long as the mods don't object....

I am pretty sure that this is the one I used, well it looks exactly the same as this one....

hopefully not jj. tossing between the taurus fan and the triple fan dirtbound setup. i cant get to maxs' link at the moment xjeepers....thanks for the link....when thier website comes up i'll have a read of it. i have a perma cool in the jeep at the moment; bearings are going...tried to find another but summit racing don't sell the fans anymore for some reason. stock fan is a bit wobbly, so this gives me an excuse to get a neat three fan setup if the fan reviews come out good.

what made you choose that one? theres no cfm rating. worth considering if you bought it and seems fine, especially for that price.

I am personally using one of these ebay 16" fans mounted to a stock fan shroud along with the other stock aircon fan. The 16" fan is wired to a relay and comes on at the same time as the stock aircon fan. They both come on at 105 celcius and take the temp down quite well. I had a zirgo 3000cfm fan before this one and it worked allot better but cos about $300 delivered from rocket ind however it failed after 18months and started to send vibrations through the car when on.

When I bought mine it had a CFM rating on it, can't remember what it was as it was 3yrs ago but it was up over 2000 CFM.....

Anyway I am happy with mine.....

A month or so ago I went to Repco and looked at their catalogue and compared CFM and amperage rates for different fans. I ordered a 12" up around the 1800cfm range. What became obvious was that the cheap fans, i.e. under $100, were only good for 500cfm or there abouts. Fans over 2000cfm were up around the $600 range. That's why I wonder about the triple fan setup for a cheap price.

Keep in mind there's very little direct correlation between Aussie prices and USA prices.

$3.50 for an engine mount there, $65-160 here
