G'day all, the check engine light's just come on on my wrangler & I have started to notice some surging at low speeds when the throttle is stable. Off the top of my head it feels like a map sensor issue or something similar, but I'd like to check the error codes before I go digging. I tried a couple methods for flashing the codes (on-off-on-off-on, holding the odo pin, door open, many combinations of both) but nothing seems to get them to display. After a bit of reading it looks like some years might not actually display the codes without a scanner (although there's many conflicting reports.)

Can anyone advise me on how to get the codes to flash, or alternatively recommend a decent value obdII scanner compatible with my wrangler?

Thanks in advance,
Nik.

Nik - Try on-off-on-off-on but just a little slower when you turn the key between on and off each time.

My check engine light came on over the weekend with codes P0068 and P0123. Both seem to relate to the throttle position sensor (TPS). My car was doing similar to what you described. Basically, not having the smoothest rev range and sitting with high revs when at idle before slowly bouncing down to the usual revs, and not declerating very quickly when coasting.

If you need a new TPS order one from rockauto.com or one of the sponsors. I called a local jeep specialist (not wooders) who advised they had one in stock but that they retailed for $198. I advised that they were $20 US online though rockauto and although I woudl prefer to support local business I would not be paying $198 for a simple plastic sensor. Wooders (Dave) if you read this I am getting a TPS dropped off tomorrow night on loan and will give you a buzz if mine defantily is the TPS.

All the best in getting the codes. I was like you thinking that my model wouldn't give the codes for a while but finally got it.

before you replace the TPS dismantle the IAC and give it a clean with carby cleaner as that will cost you nothing. they are known to gum up with gunk and carbon over time and are easy to clean.

for accessing codes and clearing codes, that is why having a scangauge is handy, besides monitoring engine systems

Good point Bonza, and thanks for the always accurate advice, I will take it apart this weekend... for anyone chasing a writeup on sorting such without shelling out good money for nothing click on this writeup (http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f9/cleaning-iac-throttle-body-write-up-dummies-1114849/)from Jeep Forum

Key trick doesn't work on 98-00 TJs so you'll need a scanner of some sort to get your codes.

I just went through this process.
Was getting the check engine light.
Code was 24 with the on-off trick which is the tps.
I tried cleaning the connections as i had just been through some water but it didn't help.

I ended up getting a new TPS from rockauto.
I bought the standard motor T-series.
Also bought a new dizzy cap, rotor, spark plugs, leads and throttle body gasket.
Cost roughly $100 posted and 3 days to get here.

Took my Throttle body off and pulled it apart.
Gave it a huge clean with throttle body/carb cleaner.
Man it was dirty!! Especially the IAC.

I just put it all back together today and it runs beautiful.
Although i may not have tightened the throttle body properly as i seem to be getting a strange air noise. But that's a problem for another day

Well my scanner arrived and works a treat.

Pulled codes:
P0132: O2 Oxygen Sensor Circuit High Voltage (Bank1, Sensor1)
P0135: 02 Heater Circuit ( Bank 1, Sensor 1)

So I guess I'll check the fuse in the morning and likely order a new O2 sensor.

After a bit of research it looks like my Jeep's sensor configuration is completely different to those described on most of the US Jeep forums. Am I correct in thinking my Jeep only has 2 sensors? One just after the Y-pipe, and one just after the cat?
It appears the two sensor holes on the headers are plugged from the factory - is this just because it's an Aussie Jeep?

Something tells me it should have 4 sensors. Have a read of this thread ... it may offer a little light http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/showthread.php?t=116129&highlight=O2+sensors

On a different note my TPS arrived from the states today and solved my engine light problem when it was replaced. Hope you get some light at the end of the tunnel.

OK, please don't anyone have a heart attack when you read this, but I got a quote from City Jeep in Melbourne just for the O2 Sensor and to get it replaced.

$380 replaced.
$230 just for the part.

I thought he might have accidentally added a zero to the price of the sensor, but apparently not. Tried to stop laughing as I thanked him and hang up the phone.

Cheers mate, any reason you recommend rock auto? Their prices look pretty good but I usually use Summit as they've been really good for me in the past. Trying to confirm the correct part number at the moment.

i got my o2 sensors of them in the past... their shipping is super quick and they always just seem to have good prices...

My wrangler is a 2003... not sure if the oxygen sensors between 2000 and 2003 have changed though...? I havent installed mine yet so im not sure if the fit but i did a fair bit of research before i got them, so im fairly confident they are right. I can get the part no's form the ones i have if you want?

u can google for the rockauto discount code for 2012, that gets you an extra 5% off also...

I'm the guy in the linked post!

My 4 02 sensors arrived today from summit. Just under 200 including postage, sensors and tool. Pretty good deal

Cheers guys, I'm fairly sure my 2000 has a different sensor configuration. As far as I can tell it's the California reg. Jeeps which have 4 sensors. National reg. Jeeps have 2 (for 2000 TJ anyway) I'll get under and have a look this weekend.
