Tj transfer case noise.

Hey guys,

I have a manual 98 tj with about 220kms, well today I was out with some mates, and I had to recover a vehicle, and could only do it in reverse, after getting him out, I've had a knocking noise coming from under the car, it only does it in reverse, 2wd, 4hi and 4lo. When the tcase leaver is in the neutral position and in reverse it makes a loud grinding noise, I'm pretty sure it's coming from the transfer case, hard to tell without a hoist. I've spent hours searching the net trying to find a solution but nothing :( just wondering if anyone on here can help?

Jordan, my money would be on your rear diff. Pull the hat off and inspect the crown wheel and pinion. If it is your rear diff it would be a lot easier to fix.

Cheers for the reply mate, pulled my box apart, and found the reverse gear to have a chipped tooth, but all good found a new box to put back in
