View Full Version : Rear Uni Joint Issues...

G'day all,

I've got an '03 TJ, and I'm having a few problems with my rear uni joint off the dif..

I keep destroying them.. In 8 months, I would have gone through about 5-7, 2 rear yokes, countless saddles... (On the plus side, I can now remove and fit a uni to the drive shaft in under an hour)

I finally managed to notice that the passenger side chassis mounted lower control arm mount hole had egged out a little, which I assume was causing all my problems, allowing the axle to move under power, so after getting that welded up, it all seemed sweet, didn't have any issues, and could put my boot into it no worries..

And now it seems to have some back to haunt me, granted the last two times were a bit extreme (Managed to get a tad airborne out bush, later that arvo reversing out of a car park, the uni gave out. The second, was out playing with the boys, got a bit sideways and hit a little rut which seemed to be enough of a jerk to destroy yet another uni)

I can't really think of any other causes or solutions except for taking the 6 hour drive to the city, finding a suspension/drive-train specialist and letting them take a look-see..

I'm currently running a 2.5" lift, SYE kit, Tom Woods rear drive shaft and 325/65R15 Muddies.

have you got Adj R Upper control arms?
is your pinion angle setup correctly?
are you running Rubicon express 2.5: springs?

That's a good question, I couldn't tell you if they're adjustable, I have a feeling they aren't, but the pinion angle is correct

As for the springs, they're 2.5 rancho springs

Larger tyres and stock 3.07 ratios will put a bigger load on the unis.
Damaged yoke will mean you'd continue to flog em out too.
But it does sound like your angles are out too (or they should be).

that's quite a large tyre is it not...?? be around a 35" tyre?
be alot of tyre for a standard diff ratio.. i run 32"s and as a daily driver my jeep sucks to drive on standard ratios. there ontop of my list along with a better lift kit that beepin ironman :confused:
