So i've been reading a bit on the Dana 30's (front) and Dana 35's (rear... However I am a bit confused. People say the 35's tend to go, not the 30's, is this because it's the rear of the vehicle or because the 30's are stronger?

I want to fit 35's on my TJ and just need to know whether I should go super 35/30 or just hope for the best? I'd like to put Detroit lockers in front and back as well, this car is meant to be a budget offroad machine so I'm hoping at least the supers are sufficient... I've noticed that you can get the supers with detroits in them already.

Currently it just has some 31's and a 4" lift, if I go 33's will it save me a lot of drama with diffs?

Cheers...

you dont have a dana 35 you have a 44 in the rear

Must have got that crossed up, I thought the 44 was a non standard option and also in the rubicon

i'll explain a little more on what brentTJ said

All australian Tj wrangler has the 30 front and 44 rear diff combination.
the same as we never got the rubi transfer case. we have the NP231 and i think the rubi have the NP241.

You have a fairly strong front and rear diff, more than capable of 33"'s alot of people do run 35's just make sure you carry spares.
When going to larger tyres install new diff ratios is strongly recomended and since your talking about opening it up for a locker thats the perfect time to do it!

you can find information regarding lockers diff ratios wheels offset and everything like that on this site just use the search function!

Cheers Rhys

AH really, I had got most of the info from the wiki page in respect to the axle, it's probably american... That's excellent news! I will definitely regear for the 35's, from what I understand 33's are borderline, but it's probably a good idea...

So would you recommend a super 30 rebuilt or replace it with a super 35 in front if I go 35"?... I'm not the type to use unnecessary revs or smash through obstacles.

Cheers for the info

Look at the rear diff, if its virtually a perfect oval its d35 if its a six sided kite thing with a large bulge in the centre its a D44, the 35 will handle 33's and even lockers if you are careful with the throttle, but definitely not 35s, the 44 is indestructible and will handle locked, 39" easy right up to 400 HP all day every day, but yeah, be sure which one you have first, its a bad mistake to make :toilet:

A TJ dana 44 will not handle 39" at all.
especially not locked.... 37's it will just handle JUST.. you'd have to be very cautious of it.

poeple this forum are running 35's on standards diffs quite happily. Like i said earlier carry spares, not that you shouldn't already be carrying them anyway! ;)

Also as there where ALL TJ's imported had a 44 no questions asked.. dont give advice if your unsure of what your talking about.

True, I'm now biting myself in the @$$, not all D44s were created equal... D44's came with 3-4 different ratings
From 1/2 tonne to 1&1/4 tonne, as to which I'd ask one of the Tj

no worries! ;)

Codral even a TJ locked on 33's is ULTRA capable... probably be alot better if its your daily driver. mine sits unlocked (lockers soon) on 32's and it suprises the hell out of me sometimes...

Yeah, going to be doing about 8 hours driving to work and back a week so might just stick to 33's

There were some 97 TJs that came with the Dana 35 rear. I had one (busted a C clip and threw an axle) and I've helped out a bloke here in Port Douglas who has one too
