Hey guys

I have a 97 TJ Wrangler

I have noticed a problem with my temperature control slider.

I can slide it between hot and cold but it doesn't seem to do anything.
It seems to be stuck on hot all the time.
This was great through winter but now coming into the warmer weather i would like to have some cold air con (especially because i heading up to the Simpson Desert in about 3 weeks haha)

I'm not really sure where i should start looking for the problem.

Anyone have any ideas?

Cheers,
Paul

The slide control uses a cable to move the blend air door. First thing you need to do is get your head down there and see if the cable has snapped or come off. I've not looked at mine for years so couldn't say if its possible for it to pop off and clip back on. I should have a look at mine though as my slider doesn't go all the way to one end.

If you get really desperate, you could by-pass the heater core altogether.

I've done this on my '97 because the heater core leaks.

I wasn't able to disconnect the heater hoses at the firewall so disconnected them at the front of the engine.
Got 2 lengths of heater hose (one @ 1/2", one @ 5/8") and a brass connector from ENZED

In this pic the original heater hoses are still there, just not connected.
You can see the by-pass hose routed around the air intake tube.
Red arrow is the connector from ENZED.
Yellow arrow is where the by-pass hose re-connects.

Hey thanks mate
I went and had a closer look. It was all attached properly at the back of the unit.
I followed the cable (which is routed the stupidest way ever) and i found there was a plastic "joiner" looking thing that had broke. When ever i used the slider instead of moving the entire cable it only moved the broken part.
Ended up just gaffa taping the plastic bit back together.

Works perfectly for now
Probably should look at getting a new cable though.
Might see if i can modify one of the many many bike brake cables i have lying around haha

Paul

Hey Magoo. I found the same prob in my car but the opposite. In winter I couldnt get any hot-ness :(
I pulled off my dash and found the connector at the back of the dash and the cable had popped off and while re attaching it I broke the clip..Ended up also fixing it with a collection of Gaff and cable ties :S
I find if I ever have any trouble with it, the other end of the cable is attached to another pulley thing under the passenger dash so when I stop at lights I can just reach down and slide the dash temp slider AND the mechanical thingo near the passengers right knee under the dash and it's all sunshine and lollypops :D
Re-reading that last paragraph, it is as confusing as hell, but eh. Bit of fun for you this arvo :P
