Hi again..
1995 xj Petrol auto.
I have noticed that the transfer case is touching (or so close i cant tell) the cross member.....well the angled piece from the centre of the cross member to the side of the sub frame (approx 45 degree in relation to the actual cross member.)

Is this normal? what sort of gap is normal?
Im chasing a small intermittent rattle/thudding. not very loud.
Is this a common thing when a mount is stuffed etc?
The centre mount looks fine, but it is like the engine and gearbox etc has twisted to the passenger side a degree or two, and now the TC is almost touching that cross member....
Should i replace my engine mounts? I am thinking if the passenger side mount has collapsed, it may cause this, or is the gap usually pretty close?

Sounds like it - very common.

Could also be the transmission mount, when they get old they sag and so the gap gets less, the gap is normally something like 15mm IIRC....

Sounds to be the same as mine was a few months back. Changed the pass engine mount (which I knew was stuffed) & trans mount (which had sagged when compared to the new one) and as JJ said now about 15mm clearance.

Thanks a bunch guys. Ill change all the mounts for safety sake. Is it a DIY job? or is it a major pain (Palm off to the mechanic style)??

Pretty easy, on a petrol. Take the airbox out to make some more room and you're good to go. A piece of wood under the sump and trolley jack to take the load and you're away.

Cheers

I did the engine mount as per post #9 in this thread http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/showthread.php?t=57848 made it quite easy. And this for the trans mount http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/showthread.php?t=67622 both of which are located in this sticky http://www.ausjeepoffroad.com/forum/showthread.php?t=64148 :)

The driver's side mount is different for a RHD I believe, but it's probably fine anyhow - the passenger's side cops heat cycles from the exhaust and fails because of this.

Check out Wooders, then Rockauto for the engine mount. Think mine worked out to about $15 delivered from Rockauto as I ordered a bunch of stuff from them.

Yes the mounts are different but you can use the same mount in both sides, the bracket has the holes already in it and they line up at least in a pre-update they do....

Hi guys, I replaced my transmission mounting about a year ago. The transmission was hitting the bash plate. Took me ages to eliminate other sources.
Anyway, some time after I got an OME lift. Only about an inch higher than stock (1998 upgrade) but it looks like the gap between my bash plate and the transmission is only about 7-10mm rather than 15 and I get a bit of a knock when I go over a spoon drain at speed.
Does the gap narrow with a mild lift or has my new mount sagged (I could have bent the bash plate but it looks pretty straight)? I replaced an engine mount previously, hopefulyy that hasn't gone??

The lift won't make any difference providing no transfer drop spacers were fitted and yes they do sag....

Try removing the bash plate and see if the noise goes away, it is only 3 bolts....
