Hi guys how stiff should my damper be? It seems fairly easy to push in and out, hence I am thinking it is on its way out. Some leakage has occured but not sure how much stiffness has been lost hence the former question.

Mine was completely stuffed, oil soaked, etc. Got a new one from Repco for around $90 as I needed it then and there. New one was much stiffer compared to the old one.

Best thing I ever did on my old Patrol was buy an adjustable steering damper.
not a return to centre one though.
After a few drives, offroad treks etc, I found the best setting between to soft and sloppy and too stiff for fast steering changes.
I bought a Tuffdog one, end up being around 6 out of 9.
If you get bigger tyres, you can knock it up a notch etc.

I first noticed mine bleeding out a few months ago, put it off for a while (as we all do  ) but now I do everything with it and have no issues, steering is responsive but forgiving, no wobble issues and wheeling goes great, starting to wonder what it's meant to be there for :p

its to slow down the steering if you hit a tree root, rut, rock etc.
It also smooths out steering wobble on rough roads.
Hit a decent rut and the wheel will spin that fast it will break your hand....A decent valved steering damper will slow it down enough to just bruise....most times
