Ok there has been lost of discussion about different issues regarding their Xj's so I thought why not go the other way?

Who loves their Jeep and why????

I admit it, I love mine, it gets me everywhere I wanna go whether it be to the shops, to take some rubbish to the tip or to the top of Cape York.
It is a tetris game to get the maximum use of the space but that is part of the fun, I also like the fact that other 4wd owners under-estimate them offroad, till I drive past them....

I also am a fan of the pre-updates, there are some issues but every model of every car does, little by little I am eliminating them....

I'm with you JJ. Mine has been amazing.

My first car that I bought 6 years ago and I have had it bring me so much fun.
I copped shit for buying a Jeep, for buying a yellow car, and for taking so damn long to make up my mind on mods... but it has been the perfect vehicle for me and I don't see that changing any time soon.

I've had a couple issues, and the odd repair that's proved way harder than I had anticipated... but I've also had it take me 8000kms across Central Australia and the Simpson Desert with 2 weeks prep, up snowy mountains in the Victorian high country, bonnet height rivers, I've filled it with water, smoke, mud and empty beer cans and it has NEVER let me down when it's really mattered.

I love my Jeep.

I like it lots:)
I've bought $250 Falcons that have been more reliable.
But to be fair, this poor ol' XJ has had a hard life and poor maintenance before me.
When it comes time though, I'll be getting another XJ:cool:. There is just something about them, I dunno what it is.
I like the power, the boxyness, the rattles, the aftermarket options.
To me, there's more to love than hate.:D

cheers

OK - a bit of nostalgia from me here re XJs. My first Jeep was a red 96 XJ - fantastic car. It never once broke down with the only repair being one uni joint in 100,000 kays.

I am with you on the looks JungleJuice. The pre update [in red] had the 'to die for' looks. Boxy with sharpish square lines, oozing character, heaps of punch under the bonnet, constant four wheel drive - can't beat it. The thing was designed for fast gravel roads. My next Jeep was the update XJ - it was soul less compared to its predecessor.

JJ, We too love our XJ (Me, Wife & Kids) We have owned our 96 Limited since mid 2000 purchased of a mates oldman with 59k on the clock. We have done over 170k in it towing our camper all over OZ including Fraser Island twice, Central oz, The Tanamai rd & the Kimberley. We are going to be hard pressed to find anything as capable & well equipped for our dollar to replace it someday. Sure i've modified it over the years & replaced all the usual problem bits but that would have to be done with any 4x4 used as we have used the XJ. It's also nice when out in the boon docks to be driving something different to all the NISSYOTA's! Only saw 1 other XJ when we did the Gibb River Rd July/Aug this year.

I love my jeep. It's always been a good help to me and my wife and kids. Every time we go camping, we use our jeep. It always come in handy. I check it every time we have a plan of staying out for camping or hiking, and I never fail to check it after a long drive on the terrains. I've seen this news a few days ago where a Cherokee Jeep was used to cross borders. It got stuck on the border wall. Smugglers utilizing ramps to cross the United States - Mexico border fence near Yuma, Ariz., were recently foiled as their Jeep Cherokee got hung up at the top of the fence. The “border fence Jeep Cherokee” went viral and the Border Patrol has another fascinating find. Make sure to purchase car (http://www.cardealexpert.com/) that works well in your situation.

I've owned, built and driven all manner of vehicles over the years. Some have been truly spectacular, some less so. Some I really wish I had kept (and a couple that I have. My X1-9 for example). There's 5 cars in my driveway in fact. A Gemini rally car, a Fiat 132 S (ex Italian Consul General's car), a modded X1-9, an S202 Benz and, last but not least, the XJ.

A couple of months back, though, I was returning from a walk from where I was camping and Jeepy (as my 6 yo calls it) hove into view below me as I crested a hill. It was then that I found myself thinking, "Is this the best thing I've ever owned?" Not so surprising was the answer of "yes".

Given that I bought Jeepy on more or less a whim two years ago to help my ex out of a bit of a spot, I suppose my answer of 'yes' ought to be a bit of a surprise. But the enjoyment it has bought me (and my boy), its reliability, its capability . . . I could go on, have seen it worm its way into my affections. You're right, JJ, it is a game of Tetris to pack for even a weekend away (with all the cr*p I seem to take), but that, too, is part of its charm.

Let's face it, the Xj is awesome!!

It's a little small for touring, but space management is a specialised skill that a lot of pride can be had from ;)

And the cost thing
I wheel with 'cruisers & nissans all the time & they break more often & are just as (or more) expensive to fix: and they cost 5 times more to buy

I love my Jeep :D

What's scary, Hamsteh, is the lad's addiction to Jeeps in particular. He calls Wranglers he sees on the road by their model designation (There's a TJ! There's a JK!). He also has an 1/8 scale RC rockcrawler that he operates with such consideration and precision for a 6 year old it's scary. He actually spotted me up onto the log in that shot (Up, Dad. Easy, more, more, right hand down a bit, keep it coming, right hand down a bit more . . .). He's got Toyota FJ Cruisers figured out as well. 'Lipstick trucks' he calls them. Why a lipstick truck? '''Cos only a girl would drive one . . . stupid IFS Prado in a party frock thing." And, no, he hasn't been 'coached' by his old man (too many 4WD Action DVDs I suspect).

This thread is killing me...

I sold my XJ (97 update) earlier in the year after pretty much everything that could have been done to it was done in the way of making it reliable and run as nice as it could (all sensors changed, regular servicing etc), everything worked as it should, susp was how I wanted and enjoyed driving it (2-3" lift), 31" KM2's on black Rugged Ridge rims, roof rack, WJ front seats, sound system, had C8.25” as well, etc etc. I loved it, was set up so well for what my wife and I wanted. The only things that I really wanted to do was fab up a rear bar and tire carrier, re-gear the diffs to 4.11's and possibly fit a locker while the front diff was open... Due to personal reasons ended up selling it (managed to sell it for more than I paid for it though minus the rims and tires which I sold separately).

Bought a 2005 Suzuki Jimny as a stop gap which was pretty modded for Jimny standards (comprehensive 4" lift from the UK), 29" mud tires, xrox front bar, hd clutch etc etc. I always wanted a Zook of some sorts (well Sierras, Vitaras, and Jimny’s) as they were always my 2nd fav 4wd. This has been great to drive around the city and on trails, but garbage on the open road on camping trips (little engine struggles at high speeds). Interestingly enough as much as the typical Australian 4wd community harps on about Zooks and their awesome offroading ability, mine was no better at all than my mates stock XJ, and another mates ZJ with 30” tires… Which is testament to how good the Jeeps are offroad. Sure my Jimny is better than the average Toyo or Nissan, but even with all its mods, it just keeps up with a stock XJ!!

Anyway, fast fwd to now. My Jimny is up for sale, I’ve had my fling. Got a buyer even before advertising it, everywhere I go people stop me and ask me about the Jimny and tell me how awesome it looks blah blah blah (most people would take that as a compliment but I’m always thinking and tell them “yeah the Jim’s good but you should have seen my previous Jeeps” lol).

Anyway I’m selling it cos I want another Jeep again, most likely gonna be a XJ cos they’re such good bang for your buck, and they have character that no ther 4wd has!!! Unfortunately, my next XJ will prob never be like my first but ah well that’s how it goes sometimes… But can’t wait to be back into a Jeep again!!

Yep, I'll admit it i love my XJ. Although sometimes I do wonder why as it has given me some big headaches in the past and at the moment it sounds pretty bloody ordinary :( The first Jeep I ever looked at seriously was a Colorado Red 96 XJ with all the fruit an XJ nut wants on their Jeep. 31's, 3 inch lift, rechipped, bored throttle body, full stainless 2.5 inch exhaust and full service history. It was immaculate but I decided not to buy it and yes I'm still kicking myself to this day over it

I bought this XJ to replace my lemon of a JK and I'm glad I did. Like any Jeep when it's running good, it's goood but when it's being temperamental, it's a nightmare. But I own it and it's awesome off road, does everything I ask of it and then surprises me by doing more. Love the 4.0 L high output donk, the get-up-and-go of this engine mated with the auto is outstanding and :toilet:
all over the new and "improved" V6 Jeep engines, but that's just my personal opinion. It's an ongoing project Jeep that I simply cannot part with and wouldn't part with even if I had the money to do so. She's my run-a-muck machine and we like digging holes where ever we go:D:D:D

I love our Behemoth 99 XJ with lots of stuff done to it. Been wheeling quite a bit recently and really start to appreciate just how capable it is. Plus it serves as my work vehicle every day and never misses a beat.

The only gripe I have is the drivers accommodation but new seats and some flatbar will fix that once I find some spare cash...

I have been 4wding for a long time. First exposure was to an Austin Champ, which I learned to drive at about nine years of age. In the mid seventies I bought an LJ50, which I followed with a Range Rover, a Rocky, and a few others.

About seven or eight years ago, the SMH started an anti bull-bar, anti 4WD campaign. At the time I had a locked, 6 inch lifted GQ with bead locked 35s, and even in our rural area it started to attract the wrong sort of attention.

So I though about what type of capable 4wd I could buy which wouldn't offend my customers.

I bought a turquoise TJ.........

It didn't take long to double lock, regear, 285/70R17, put proper arms in, etc., yet it still didn't offend, even with about 4 inches of lift.

It did a few Logan Challenges, as well as provide recoveries for some of the events I ran like the 4x4 Battle of the States.

The last year I owned & loved it, it did less than 1500km........so I decided to sell it. I am not convinced that this was one of my better decisions.

I had already bought a few XJs and I have ended up with a couple of updates and a WJ V8 Overland.

Love the '99 with its 4" lift, front Lokka, 17x9s with 285/70R17 STTs, drop boxes, relocators, Discos, arms, etc., for its offroad capability.

Love the '00 which is a stock 16" wheeled Classic for its DD on road capability and economy.

Love the '03 Overland for its luxury.

Best of all, the whole fleet owes less than $25,000. ;)

This picture summarises the REALITY of owning a JEEP and using it for its intended purpose. Just like the Marlboro ads in the 1970s, but with the horsepower of a 4.0L I-6.

Hate to admit it but there must be something I love about the XJ. I have just, rebuilt, regeared, remounted and re-everything on my D30. I have fitted new RE CA's. I have a C8.25 on the way. New damper, plus a whole lot of other stuff. I don't know whether I love it or whether I am addicted to making it better. No joke I have easily racked up 4k of repairs in the last four weeks, probably more like 5k. I think half the fun is building it and then posting what you have done in the XJ forum :p.
It would be hard to say if it has been my favourite vehicle as I have to choose between my old worked 68 Capri and the XJ. I do know that the XJ has lasted longer.

Horsepower?
I hear banjo's playing when I look at that pic....

I had an XJ once...... It was stocko company car when I purchased it, did lift/bar/winch/etc etc. Was pretty capable and surprised a few mates, but after about 18 months of offroad work it was showing signs of rapid deterioration (compared to when I got it). The body creaked and groaned, suspension bushes were starting to flog out, front tailkshaft had been replaced and rear wasnt too far away, typical issues such as underbonnet heat, heater/air con control problems..... they are high maintenence. like all Jeeps, you end up working on it more than driving it.

I sold it due to crap economy/range, lack of size and comfort for 4, lack of towing ability of a decent sized offroad camper..... a number of reasons.

Whilst I had it, it was fun. Love? No. Fun, yes.

Not out of place at all, braith7. (They're both great lookin' units by the way). I have a 'relationship', or 'understanding', with mine. I treat it real nice and only ask it to do what it's comfortable doing. That it's comfort levels are quite a bit higher than, say, that of a Kia Sorento, or a VW Tiguan, or a Rangie Evoque, or a, or a, or a . . . Together we decide what we're prepared to tackle.

Is that too weird? Just another Jeep thing?

What year was that one? As it doesn't have the indicators above the wheel arches, also the driving lights wouldn't have helped much....

It was a 96 - no side indicators on North American XJs in general i believe

Yeah, the driving light pivots were loose and were always needing to be re-positioned

and yes, ugly wheels :)
