the top pic is the one under the bonnet.

that bottom picture looks to be the bosh ecu which if you pull the bottom dash pannel off on the drivers side and look towards the middle of the dash (behind the CD player area) you will see the ECU, not the easiest thing to get to.

good luck

What brand of chip? Those instructions look like the ones that come with the Spyder chip.
There were several different variations for the ECU & it is the one behind the radio.
A PITA to get at.
If you have the latest Bosch ECU, the chip may not work as in the Last ECU program there is a security section that makes it ignore the chip.

Good Luck !!

So is it easier to pull under the steering wheel out, or pull the centre radio centre out

I dont know much about that chip. I hope its good.
If you take the trim off from between the steering wheel & the peddles, mine has a steel plate under it that has to come out as well, you should be able to see the big plug on the side of the ECU (I think they call it ECM). There is a little locking tab that you need to pull to release the plugs. You can then pull the plugs out & should be able to get at the loom that they are connected to.
Mine is not a 68 pin, I think its about 92 pins.
Good luck.

I have a Spyder chip I came by but the fitting instructions are for the 68 pin ECU. i was told the later Bosch ECU some how cancels it out. I need to ring Spyder in the UK some time to find out how to wire it in &if it will work.

Mine has 6 wires but not all are used, depends on the ECU.
The one I have has about 7 or 8 different tune settings that can be used.

Whats along the fire wall side of it?
Its not easy to get to.
I think you will find you have one of the older ECU's like your pin out diagram shows.

I pulled the ecu out from its spot, I have access to the plug, but I can't see it, I can't find how to unplug it

There should be a locking tab, probably red or green, that you either push in or pull out. Once you do that the plug will come out.

i worked it out finally, what a weird connector, well this has been one of the hardest modifications i have attempted myself, but finally SUCCESS!!! wow what a difference, took it up a hill near my house on a sharp bend id normally do 40-50km , i went round that bad boy at 70! and egt's are only rising an extra 10-20c for $170 im stoked

That egt increase could equate to 100c increase before the turbo. Thats how the turbo works.
good to hear the chip works !

Hey Grandpa_spec,

Could you please:
1. Take a photo of the installed item?
2. Confirm which model/part you purchased? - seems to be a eco&power chip or just the power chip?

I have a '99 TD and am interested in this :-)

Cheers, Cheezel.

Best you make sure it will work on your jeep. You need to know how many pins there are on the connection socket on your ECU.

Hey Layback, yep thanks for the heads up. Will definitely be doing my research, just thought I'd take the easy option & ask grandpa_spec what he has and is working for him first tho :-)

I read a bunch of Patrol forums about these and everyone was very positive, they seemed to potentially either a) raise the idle speed or b)introduce a little lag when dropping idle speed

My XJ still has an annoying (yet predictable) habit of stalling (engine cuts out) when revving past 3k rpm. This can be avoided with quick (non lazy) gearchanges or by blipping the throttle - so for me it's a minor thing though the mrs won't drive the car :-)

Lots of info on correcting my issue, fuel quantity actuator/fuel pump adjustment, injector cleaner etc. I decided not to adjust the pump but am just running injector cleaner presently, seems a bit better etc.
I'm thinking if the idle speed is slightly higher and drops off more slowly it will cure my issue. If it also give me more power for less(?) fuel than I'm happy with that too!

Cheers!
