Hi guys, does anybody know where to get hold of a 96 xj FSM, I know where to find the 95 & 97 FSM's but I can't find the 96, worst part is thee are two variants of the 96 to make things that little bit more difficult, I am primarily after the electrical section with the wiring diagrams, connector pinouts etc....

Cheers

I went down this road when I was chasing a drain in my car. I never did find the manual out there!

My google-fu is usually pretty good, and it eluded me!

Glad to hear I'm not the only one with this problem! I spent hours hunting this down too and had to settle for the 95 and 97. It's hard to believe there's not an online version of it out there somewhere.

Never seen a 96 XJ FSM either. Surely one of the ones available should match a 96 model. Is it a pre (95) or post (97) facelift model? Could it be that like TJs there is no actual 96 "model year" for the XJ? in which case any pre facelift models built in 96 would still be 95 model year, and any post facelift models produced in 96 would actually be 97 model year. 97 model year TJs wear produced as early as March 96.

No this is not the case with the Xj's, the 96 models are OBD2 as opposed to the 95 models which are OBD1, the early 96 OBD2's use the 95 model OBD1 sensors and plugs on everything except for the PCM, the later 96 OBD2's use the later 97 model sensors and plugs on most things but as the 97's were the start of the updates the connectoers on a lot of other things are different including different fuse panels etc.

Even simple things like the overhead console from a 95 plugs into a 96 but won't work despite being the same part number but the loom between the o/head console and the dash loom are different...

This is why I need a FSM...

I tried Chrysler 9 years ago when I bought my Xj and they had stopped selling them by then.
As for the US forums, been there done that...

I kind AJOR member has loaned me his genuine 1996 FSM, I will take some "notes" from it as most of it will be the same as the 95 FSM only really the electrical diagrams should be different...

HOLY SH*T!

I'm seriously, seriously impressed. Rocking horse s%^t indeed! I'd figured long ago that the '96 FSM was mere vapourware or confection (right up there with unicorns).

Yeah, so did I, some of the US forums, including Greatlakes claim that the 96 is the same as the 95 which we know to be completely false due to the change in the OBD systems and on top of that there is two variations of OBD2 in the 96 build...

I have 4 electrical sections scanned and converted to PDF so far...

JJ you are a star !!
I dont need them, but in terms of preservation of important technical information, you are doing the jeep community a big service !!
Maybe the mods will see fit to make the pdf's a sticky.

Hey guys

As far as I'm aware (although I may be wrong) the only difference between the '95 and the '96 is the change from OBDI to OBDII...
I have the '95 FSM as PDF's if anyone wants them... Virtually everything should be the same from '95 to '96...

Cheers
Alex

The change from OBD1 to OBD2 means quite a bit when you are looking at electrical diagrams, for instance try finding where the rear O2 sensor connects to the loom in the 95 manual...

You're right in that most of the 96 is the same as the 95 but the electrical section is somewhat different, hence I am only doing the elecrical section of the FSM.

20 sections scanned and converted to pdf....

Just for an update, all 30 sections of the wiring diagrams are scanned and pdf'd, the supplement also has the connector info covering the differences between the early and the late builds which is also scanned and pdf'd..

junglejuice, thanks for replying to my question. I'd always assumed it like the Wranglers, and that any overlap would be less convoluted than it seems. I have an early TJ and although there are many connectors that are leftovers from the YJ Wranglers the OBD connector is OBDII.

I too am another who thought the 96 XJ FSM must be a myth, to suddenly see one is almost akin to finding the Holy Grail. Rocking horse shit indeed - though incidentally an uncle used to make them, so if anyone wants any sawdust I can ship to Oz.

JJ,
Did you scan the diesel stuff?
I am interested in knowing where the ECU on the early models connects to.
Mine has the late ECU with 90 odd connections, the earlier ones had less ~ 68 or so.

I have a torrent for this manual, if anybody is interested pm me your email address and I can send you the torrent file, this is only for the electrical section as the rest is the same as a 95...

Thanks JJ!

Also if people once they managed to download this, could seed for a while, that would be great too!

Is anyone still downloading this? My download finished last night, and I have left my client seeding, will probably continue to do so for at least the next few days.

The download should be a bit quicker now there's a couple more seeds out there
