I need a rear bar with tyre carrier to suit the update XJ. Protofab are not well suited to the lines of the update, IMHO so I now need other options. I can not build one myself so that is out. I am happy to get one made in the new year but who makes them?

As in a custom bar? The JCR too expensive?
Otherwise maybe try DBOR?

JCR? Never heard of that one. DBOR don't do one for an XJ. They mainly stick with TJ's and maybe JK's? I think I tried them before. Probably after a custom bar as it seems that what everyone else has. Just that most people who have them have made their own. That is where I come unstuck. I can't make metal stuff for you know what ;).

Ok so I have found Hanson make them. I can get one but they are in WA. Anyone know much about them. I have emailed the WA stockist but I am not sure if they will respond. I have had trouble in the past with other 4x4 companies not returning emails.
What I need to know is will they fit an update? Also can I keep my Hayman Reece tow bar in place.

If you look at the pic you will see that the hole for the towbar tongue is part of the frame. I dont think you could have your towbar as well.

I was wondering that. However I thought it may have been for a Hayman Reece recovery hitch like I have at the moment. I can not see those chassis brackets being legal to tow with. I enquired about another rear bar and was told the uni body chassis is not strong enough to support their tyre carrier rear bar. Which suggest that towing with their bar would be even worse. My thinking was aint no way I want to tow 1300kg without the use of a proper tow bar. The other thing was it would mean the tow hitch would be 200mm higher than normal. Just did not make sense to me but you could be right Layback. I have emailed them so hopefully I will hear back or I will have to call them.

Didn't know they were in WA... looks like it suits the pre update anyway?

Just remember if it isn't load rated with a stamped plated it most likely won't be legal to tow with...

Yerr exactly that is why I am not gonna get one. They are an US import so no way gonna cut for Aust standards. The bloke also emailed me today and said my Hayman Reece won't fit with the Hanson rear bar. So I am back to square one. I have pics of Steve F's which he let me take at Jambo. I think now I am going to have to get someone to engineer me some plans then I will have to take them to my local welding bloke to get the bar made. Either way I doubt I will have a bar for my Tassie trip in Feb to Mar.

Heres how the U.S. towbars work ...

Their HaymanReese lookalikes come with different ratings depending on the "class"

.... but as already mentioned ... and despite the U.S. weight classification - they're not likely to have our nanny state, stamp of approval ...

US DOT hitch classes .... http://www.randpcarriages.com/tech/TrailerHitchClasses.htm

Damn things turned up before the shed did ...

So they'll be sitting on a pallet for a while yet.

If you're not in a rush .... I might have towbar/wheel carrier available in a few months ...

Anthony, once my XJ is running again I'll snap some pics of how I;ve modified my Protofab rear bumper to both fitt better with the update lines, but to also be compatible with my existing Hayman Reese tow bar.

Do you really need a full rear bar? I like the stock bar but need a tyre carrier so I have been thinking about these for awhile.

Yer I think freight will kill it, $600. Something like that really needs an Aust reseller who can get them shipped with other gear to keep the freight down.
Looks lke a modded Proto Fab or the tow bar type will be the options to choose from.

The update rear end is similar to the Pre other than the returns on the bumper ends.
The bumper pictured below is one I'm working on. The bumper is 6mm thick high tensile Aluminium. I'm working on it being strong enough for a winch. Fitting a wheel carrier could be done, I just don't like carriers. The mounts/bumper don't contact the towbar at this stage so no issue there. I will be tagging to the towbar if I fit a winch but I will be bolting to the existing bar with out modifications to the tow bar.

Welds look pretty average.

But the welds are done by a robot... maybe the robot normally works as a vacuum cleaner or something as they look far from professional....

I don't think you will find a link, give you a hint I suspect that TBS stands for Tezza's Back Shed.... ;)

Have a look at the pre update KAYMAR rear bar and carrier i have 1 on mine and my young blokes UPDATE, both run bushwacker flat flares so no side skirts around to the wheel well, so good for us, however i dont think it would be hard to fab some up if wanting to keep original flares lot eiasier than starting from scratch, you will need to modify the rear door by filing out a small area to clear corner of bar but done properly not noticeable, the tow bar is rated with 14 bolt mounting points. and you can sometimes pick them up for about $400, worth a look!

I did think of it briefly but I run a 125l fuel tank and tow a camper when I tour that holds 80l so I dismissed it again.
I am going to build a new one at some stage that will hopefully incorporate a new rear bumper so who knows how that one will turn out....
