I have had some noises in the front of our TJ for a while now and it got real bad on a Boxing day run of some steep rocky hill climbs .
It seems to be that the pinion bearing in the front diff (3.73) has shat itself (the yolk is pretty loose going into the diff.)
I have a HP Dana diff in a 96? xj with 4.88 gears in it .
My question is ,could I change my 3.73 gears into the HP diff without too much trouble and put the whole axle in to my TJ .?
Any advice would be welcome .

No mate ,checked it all out last week ,hubs are good ,uni joints replaced eary this year ,(pulled em any way to check ,all good ) .
The front pinion has a lot of play going into the housing and its starting to leak oil !
got a rebuild kit coming, should be here tomorrow and I have a near new R+P the same ratio in the shed .
will be fixed by next weekend .;);)

you have 3.07 gears in your wives Jeep !

If you have a HP D30 with 4.88 in it ? this would mean it's already been rebuilt/modified ? if so its cheaper to buy a thick cut 4.88 gear set for the D44 for the rear, then you won't have the annual clutch change.
A HP 30 is the biggest waste of time and money ever ! its only ever considered a good mod in Australia !
why are you so angry ?

Unsual for that ratio to be in it. ours are the same car and mine was 3.07. either way

Stick 4.88 in the back. just get make sure ask for thick cut gears that way you won't have to change the carrier !
