View Full Version : Removing D35 crosspin with air locker installed

I've got the diff cover off at the moment because I'm trying to remove the rear axles but I can't get the cross pin out. I've removed axles before on stock D35's with no problems but this is the first time I've done it with a locker installed. Instead of a long hex bolt holding the pin in place there's a much shorter allen head bolt that doesn't appear to be long enough. Even with the bolt removed the cross pin won't budge.

Here's what I'm talking about (someone else has obviously had the same problem):

Any ideas?

Bigger hammer
is there any way you could have compression on the pin?
upon watching the video, you sure the retainer screw hasn't snapped off in there?

Yep, I tried it both ways. The bolt doesn't appear to be broken or damaged either.

I'm considering a bigger hammer but I don't want to break anything!

Somthings holding it for sure. As I am sure you know Oli those pins just slide in and out with ease normally.

So what you mean is bigger hammer

So, I'm thinking the end of the retaining bolt looks smooth due to thousands of k's since it snapped, slowly putting a nice worn face on it, you may have to punch the pin trough 10-15mm, turn the sucker around then drag it out :hammer:

The cross pin is a very tight fit. Install and pics here....

I have removed a few now and they have just pushed out never an issue. I checked your link though Rastus and right at the end it mentions an allen key bolt possibly specific to an ARB locker install the bolt is apparently a lot shorter than stock. Oli I would see if an allen key unsrews it (the unseen bolt).

Yes an allen key did unscrew the short bolt, that's the first thing I did. One suggestion is there may be a pin that slides in first and the short bolt just holds the pin in place. I better put the big hammer away and go and have another look first. :)

Thanks for your help guys. There was a sneaky hollow pin right down in the hole that is almost impossible to see. I somehow managed to get it out by bending a split pin. I don't like this design (see attached photo).

Hi mate if you have a ARB locker this is not the right pin looks like someone has broken the stock arb pin and has just come up with this setup you can buy new pins from arb

Yes it is ARB. I'll have to use the roll pin again for now so I can get it back together but I'll buy a proper bolt first chance I get. Thanks.
