i know a few of u guys have put LS1's in your tj's has anyone gone auto?

where did u source the engine/box a mate of mine said i could get a GEN111 and transmission for about 2-3K at jap imports?

can i use the standard ecu or get a new haltech or similar or do i use the commodore ecu?

did u buy a conversion kit?

if yes how much and where from?

i think marks adapters make a conversion kit but im not sure if its for engine& gearbox etc or if it fits the commodore engine up to the tj box or the commodore box up to the tj transfercase, so i need to do some research.

thoughts please,
Nathan aka Tassie...

ok so iv found the weld in engine mounts:

http://www.advanceadapters.com/products/713093--gm-gen-iii-vortec-engine-mount-kit-with-ac/

and the GM 4L60E to atlas adapter kits:
from what i can understand i need to use both...?

http://www.advanceadapters.com/products/as-9111--700r--4l60e-adapter-to-atlas-2-speed--4-speed-transfer-case/
http://www.advanceadapters.com/products/50-0405e--6-bolt-to-4-bolt-adapter-with-vss-for-the-1997-current-gm-4l60e4l65e-4-speed-automatic-transmissionadapter-kit/

and the ATLAS2:

http://www.advanceadapters.com/products/atlas2--atlas-2-speed-transfer-case/

or ATLAS4:

http://www.advanceadapters.com/products/atlas4--atlas-4-speed-transfer-case/

the 2 speed is estimated at $2500 plus postage
and the 4 is estimated at about $3500 + postage

cheers guys i know redtj has done one i havent spoken to him yet,
just trying to figure out stuff/parts i need.

i can justify the price as these gearbox's are so expencive and since my engine/transmission is toast and my tranny isnt far behind i figured why fix em when i can do a gen3/auto/atlas4 conversion for a bit more cost than fixing what i got and itl be twice the car in the end;)

What about the diffs ? Don't even think your right foot is light enough to save them :-)

was thinking HP D30 with RCV's and chromo's for rear ;) i havent broken an axle yet even with 60kg 35"S and twin locked on standard axles im not worried

Ummmm my 2c worth Tas. May be right or wrong, but my experience and research.....

You will blow the standard beefed up diffs to bits. Going lower ratios will multiply torque, also give you a tiny front pinion gear which will either snap or smash crown wheel teeth. D30 uni's wont cut it.
The rear will also be marginal.

With 37's I'd go 4.88 ratios or you will lose crawl speed. Yeah the 8 will pull 4.56 but how fast do you want to go Offroad? My Atlas has 3.0 low which is better than the 2.7 ish of the NP transfer.

Most V8 TJ's will be auto.... It's hard to get a decent manual with the correct gear set ratios. A NV 3500 or AX15 are only good for about 300nm..... A gen 3 is 460+. An NV 4500 will do it, but its a big heavy bastard and with a very slow heavy shift.

I'd go a beefed 4L60, even better and stronger is a 4L80 but cost may be an issue. Some use T700 4 speeds which is a dumbed down non electronic 4L60. Kewish Autos in South Dandenong build a lot of competition autos and may be worth talking to.

You can order an Atlas with any input or output configuration. IIRC the standard NV or AX15 output shaft is the same as T700 etc

Will watch with interest.

Btw, Genright do a complete Gen3 conversion kit for TJ's. wiring and a few bits will need to be modded for rhd.

Check Wooders and see what he can do.... Don't forget local purchase means local support if things aren't as expected.

Also Cambo on here recently did a V8 Tj.... Still issues with rego here in Vic though, not sure about Tas rules.

Andy at Yellingbo Automotive may be of assistance and advice, maybe give him a call if he's not busy. He had a bit to do with rebuilding Evil-O's comp ready V8 Tj, as well as maintaining Johnny Stav's comp rig and building his own.
He is Gen3TJ on here I think.

Cheers

thanks for the input richo i know that the diffs will be under size both for the engne and the tyre size but i want to get more into lo (LOW) crawling work on the rocks rather than mud and stuff and from my experience if u sit in low 1st at near idle even with locker in i doubt u will blow the diff or axle.

i have spoken to redTJ and go a basic understanding o what else i need besides the obvious which was some great insite i will be using the 4l60e transmission and probably an atlas4 if i do blow my differentials to smitherines ill upgrade them at a later date alot of it i beleive comes down to driving style/technique ;)

i did not know about the genright conversion i will look more into this

i will be doing heaps more research on the subject as it will be quite a while before i start the conversion i need to save alot of money haha:shock:
