The Saginaw steering box used on the Wrangler, is the same part number used on current RHD Ford F150's and is more cheaply sourced NOT from a Jeep supplier. Tell me what state you live in and I will tell you where to source one at the right price.

HOWEVER! Just because a component is leaking doesn't mean it requires replacing. Saginaw rebuild kits are readily available and if the box has been neglected during its life, leaks, loss of hydraulic pressure and reduced power steering performance are to be expected. The power steering system just like the cooling system is generally neglected.

My 97 TJ's steering box is currently leaking a few drops a day. This happened about 6 months ago and I took it to ARB in Osborne Park in Perth. I got the lower seals replaced as this was the cheaper option at the time as I thought the mud and dirt may have just stuffed them up.

This worked for a few months but as I said it has started to leak again so there is probably a problem higher up. I will get it looked again in more depth if the leak starts to flow rather than drip, combined with checking the fluid every now and again.

TJ Pete is now in deep Doo-doos.

I refer to above stated evidence Ya Worship. It stands that the aforesaid TJ Pete, on this, a JEEP forum, has advocated a replacement part that is not labeled (heaven forbid) Jeep.

It is further alleged M'Lord that this henious crime also included a word refering to another type of 4X4 starting with "F".

I further put it to this assembled court (kangaroo type) that this type of blatant disregard for keeping this forum/tribe/assembley pure Jeep in just "not on" and has "bad vibes".

Possible Red card here.....

:D :D

Ok yellow Jeep , yellow card.

Stands to reason.

Is the steering box in the TJ the same as one in a FSJ or similar?

boys make sure you aren't filling it u to much cause it will cause it to leak - on the tj the fill line is pretty low.

trust me i worked out the hard way!

DIY - also many groans are probably just behind the steering wheel, try spraying a bit of silicone lube or wd40 behind the wheel where it joins onto the dash - common problem

again i though it was not having enough fluid cause when i added a bit and the groan would go away but then it leaked again. thats how i worked ut the fill line is pretty low and it stopped leaking and stopped making noise

AAAhh, the power steering box, the bane of my life.

Never been the same since some joker posing as a power steering specialist got his grubby little hands on it. Found out later on that he takes his own personal vehicles to another power steering place to get work done.

Costs around $400 bucks to get all seals in the box replaced, including the seal set.

I will need a new box soon too. I got a quote for a 2nd hand one from Jeeeparts for over a grand. Stuff that. TJPete, bring on the 'right priced' steering boxes in QLD!!
