Well I've decided to go to a TH700R4 in the '78 CJ instead of the manual.

Which means I have to convert from the Quadratrac to a Dana 300 or 231 anyone got any suggestions?

I figured the 231 might be a little easier to get my hands on.

Has anyone done a conversion like this? I know the back diff has to go but can I still keep the front?

or a dana20 factory adaper from a 73/74 wagoneer this is what i have in my cj6

thats an exellent conversion, dana 300, then get a centered diff, all thats left to bolt the d300 to the engine is a suitable gearbox    ...... seriously im about to change diffs if youre looking for a centered amc20

Am interested...... :P Although i found a converter today to the old quadratrac... still deciding.

Will the d300 work ok with the stock front diff?

Anyone out there done a conversion simmilar to this? Anything to watch out for?

i dont know if there is a difference between the front diffs in a quady or d300 equiped cj :?: :?: but from memory they are the same diff. all i remeber from my conversion is i needed to get a adapter plate from the states, which was cheaper than buying it locally, the box itself was also imported and ended up being 4grand cheaper than here(i dont know if i should mention names of these ripoff merchants) i guess what im saying is if u have to mailorder some bits to make youre conversion work, it could be cheaper than sourcing the stuff here :)

Hey Ian, well its all comming together now...

Found a place in Vic that sells the TH700 fully reconditioned (and hotted up a little) with a lockup converter. They will also alter the bell housing for you to suit the trimatic 253 - no adaptors :). Its a bit pricy but you only want to do this once :)

Advanced adaptors have a kit that bolts a TH700R4 straightup to the Quadratrac so I can save a few bucks not changing the xfer case.

Only thing thats going to mess me up now I think its the tail shafts... the turbo 700 is a shorter than the 400.... we will see!

May be too late but incase someone else is looking at this conversion check this out

http://www.jbconversions.com/pages/products/adapters/1001.html

A T700R4 to dana 300 adapter and rotation plate in one allowing the dana 300 to be clocked up out of the way

You should poke around these guys website they have heaps of great stuff including beefy 4:1 and heavy duty input and output shafts They claim with the heavy duty shafts 4:1 gears and rotation plate to be as strong if not stronger than an atlas at half the $$ **)
