I'm in the market for a nice 2002-2003 TJ and I'm starting to wonder if prices will drop a bit once the new Wrangler hits and people start upgrading.

What do you guys think?

...Yup....

I think it'll take 2 years, or until secondhand 2007's hit the secondhand market. I reckon the new wrangler will start at about about 5-6k more than the current ones and therefore those people in the market for a little cheap 4wd (CRV, RAV-4, Wrangler etc) won't want to spend up towards 40k. For crying out loud, they've been 4k cheaper for the last 12 months than i paid for mine 4 years ago and mine was a GREAT price back then a $34k, now they're under $30k with heaps more stuff.

Either way i'm not gonna consider a new wrangler for 2-3 years until they iron out all the bugs as i'm sure there will be plenty :)

i paid just under 35 for mine in 2004. But it was dual roof, full doors and the extreme sport model. I can't imagine they will drop much below where they are now, i am sure the dealers will offload what they have prior to getting the new ones.

in 2002 when i bought mine, dual roof, full doors and the extreme sport model weren't available at all and getting a basic softop sport under $35k was a bargain :(

The price on 2nd hand TJ's has totally dropped over the last year to 18 months already. Is only going to get worse. No way i will sell now. Well not unless i have to.

Looking back through my old 4wd mags from '98 and 2000, the list price for a sport was $36000 and a renegade was $39 - 41k

damn! i paid 25k on the road for my 04 renegade, 2nd hand with 20k kms, full doors, hard and softop, alloy wheels n all associated renegade bits. in absolute mint condition. this was in september though...so they have dropped a fair bit already.

i believe they will hold value till the new JK's come on the 2nd hand market too...

I think the prices for second hand vehicles will depend on what the new JK comes in at, I can't see them dropping all that much from what they are now. They may even go up slightly if the new version is more exxy than what their running the TJ's out at (for $30k for a new one ATM how can you go wrong!).

I agree to an extent, but I think like any new model introduced, there will be at least a slight drop in used prices. Also, unlike most of the hardcore jeep fans on this forum, many people are happy to try other fourbies. Thats where I think the price drop won't be too bad, as the Tj is still a viable option to other car makers.

It wont just be Wranglers that are affected price wise when the JK comes out. Cherokee and Grand Cherokee prices will drop and I also think Patrols and Prados etc will be affected too. If you browse other forums you'll see there is a great deal of interest in the 4 door JK, not just from Jeep owners. Who wouldn't want a 4 door Wrangler in a diesel with a removable hardtop :)

Cheers
Steve

from what i got told by jeep was that the price will not drop, they are just running them out at the same price until theres no stock left and then they will have the new model.

FWIW the local newspaper had a article on the new JK and is suggesting prices will start from $31990 so unless their doing drive away deals we're back to the $36k price range for the 2 door.

Well I guess I can answer this question now. I received a flyer in the mail today telling I can buy a new 06 TJ auto only for $24,990.
Thats about $5000 cheaper than I paid for my near new Wrangler about 10 years ago.
Cherokee sport Demonstrators for $29,990, still too much???
Reading the fine print the TJ has, 2% stamp duty and Govt charges and dealer Delivery of $2995, I would go and pick it up.

I paid around $33K (inc on-road) with a few goodies loaded back in 2000...

Yeah I got the same brochure 24,990 + on roads for the auto TJ. I could upgrade to the Rubicon 2 door for 20 to 25K after I sell my 05 TJ with over 10k of mods"s but who is to say the JK is a better 4wd and then I would need to lift it, get some off road tyres/wheels and replce those ugly bumpers so thats a 35k upgrade. I dont think so. Maybe I will wait until about 2011 for the rumoured special edition with the 6 litre Hemi.

I don't know how I got onto that mailing list, may be from the jambo. 6 lt Hemi would be good in the TJ. They must be clearing the TJs out. I looked at the red rubkion today, looks nice, but I'll stay with the TJ even if is only worth (Redbook) Average Private Price+ $9,100 - $11,900
Trade In Price Guide+ $7,100 - $8,600

i bought my tj brand new late last year and i don't regret my choice
this is how i see it, the tj is proven as its been around for a long time and there are plenty of people that have great amounts of knowleadge about them
as for the jk, new to the country, less local knowleadge and a whole heap more money
as for resale i'm not concerned about that as i don't plan on reselling, by the time i'm done with this tj it will only be good for scrap metal

but........
if i ever have the need for a new daily driver to go in the shed next to the bush rig, i'd consider a 4 door rubi

The price really held out well for the past 3 or 4 months. I was surprised because it was well published that the new Jeep was arriving at a similar price to the old one. I think this might have been because dealers ran out of the TJ's well before the new one had hit our shores. Will be interesting to see what happens in the next 6 months.

Does anyone else find it odd that Jeeps are so cheap compared with the competition? My gf liked the look of the 2 door Pajero but its stupid expensive in comparison

Thumbs up to Jeep for value

jeep prices today are cheaper than in say 2002 due to exchange rates.

in 2002 AUS$1.00 bought only US$0.50, whereas last couple of years has bought about US$0.80.
bought mine in september 2005 for $35000 on road with dual tops, cruise, mags, etc, etc.
as far as the new wrangler goes, not sure if I like it, especially the four door version

IMHO redbook smoke crack.......I regularly watch a range of sale places and rearly do you see TJ prices as low as they suggest.....
It's even funnier when you look up old model Jeeps....
The silly thing is they seem to just apply standard depreciation rates, and allow nothing for the retained value due to Collectability etc.......

But still pretty good resal I thinks - a 97 TJ which might have been 30k brand spanking, still regularly get 10k (or more)...IMHO that's not bad for 10 years....compare it to a similar priced/aged dunnydoore....

I got my 65th for $31,000 late last year, my mate bought exactly the same vehicle optioned in jan last year from the same stealership for $38,000 (he only got 6months rego I scammed 12).

I think the sale of the "65th annaversary" proves that TJ prices will drop a little, but in my opinion, not dramatically.

I mean look at every other vehicle, when the new models come out they generally always drop in price somewhat

Was told last month that there are only 70 New 2006 TJs left in Oz so they will go quick and the newby will be the only one you can get "new"

You have to remember that it will take time for the new model to come onto the second hand market. Therfore i would say it might take a while for TJ prices to drop if they do at all.

Out of all the cars I have ever owned the TJ has held its value the best. Obviously there is a strong demand for the cars. I find it hard to believe that there will be a large drop in prices.
