Differing opinions will be listed below in the next few hours ;)

I put my vote on 33s. Paid a cheap price cause I got them second hand.

Have tried a few of the mainstream tyres, i rekon is is pretty hard to go past the new STT for a good play tyre that behaves on road. I ran 33x12.5 STT's on a 15x8 rim with 4.56 gearing, this combo worked really well.

I also have a 6 speed and am planning on going 4.56's just in case I ever go to 35's. I figure the 6th gear will allow it to cruise comforably at the limit.

i have the 5 speed... i didnt want to ever run 37's or 38's, but was unsure whether i would go to 35's or stay at 33's.

I am just about to put in 4.56 ratios (as soon as the fuggers arrive), I know a couple of guys on here with 4.56's and 35's... and they work well. I will probably stay at 33's... but this way, i figure it will be driveable on 33's and just as driveable on 35's.

But really, at the end of the day... its all personal choice. Depends what you want to do with your TJ.

Got 33s on 4.56 gears and it runs beautiful - it still has decent acceleration in 4th (ie up hills) and if i want to go to 35s, the gears will handle them nicely too.

Offroad I am really happy with the ratios too, 2nd gear 4L will take me ANYWHERE :D

I have "alloy usa" gears, bought them from 4wd.com in US and i cant remember what i paid for them. It was reasonable anyway. 8-)

I run 33's with 4.56. Got it fitted at suburban bout 6 months ago and am Very happy with it.( mines a 02 5speed manual) It cost me bout $3000 from memory without lockers. Had to get a new carrier for the front but got a "thick" cut gear for the rear which allowed me to keep the original LSD. It has more torque now than it did when it was stock on standared wheels.

you didn't say if you have an Auto or Manual...but if it's the 5 speed 33's and 4.56 are perfect....if your ever thinking about 35's go the 4.88 instead

I was always under the impression, that the lower gearing, the thinner the gears. (old school)

factory 4 cyl use 4.1 gears, while the 6 cyl went with 3.73, or 3.07 if small tired or automatic. Too much torque will blow the rear end.

Severe rock crawling go as low as can go. Normal trail riding or street use, stick as close to stock gearing as possible.

I'm at 3.73 with 31's. This summer, planning on 4.1 for 33's

but I still only have the Dana 35 rear. (for now)

4.88 break quicker then 4.56 when driving hard off road

Please explain? Is it coz 4.56 are thicker? I thought slower gearing would be friendlier on the forces of the gears.

4:88 is a bit tall for 33's isnt it?
