Welcome to AJOR.

I recognise your TJ from the hardcore pics section on VJC...

You guys in Arizona have a few more rocks to play on than us, and build your Jeeps a little stronger than the average Aussie TJ.

I'm AussieTJ on VJC. (very imaginative heh?) Good to see a few of you guys making the trek over.
Always nice to see what other Jeepers do for fun, share tech stuff etc...

Different approach at Dogbite.

Good thinking, can't see many other options with that undercut. Sure beats rock stacking!

No, it was at Absolute Offroad's grand opening at their new shop. I was tire stacked all day, and some jackasses flopped my Jeep in the parking lot while I was inside.:wall:

Just a little something I cooked up myself... I am actually going to productize them and start selling them soon... Gonna call them Rockeyes.

They work great, especially for night runs.

It wouldn't happen to be Chewy Granola and Crunchy Oatmeal from Jk-Forum.com would it? If so, those are my two brothers-in-law from Texas... I installed some lights in their Jeeps just about a month ago when we were up in Colorado.

A couple vids of a local trail.....mine is the yellow TJ. Trail is tougher than the vids show. The blue TJ took a cable up the first fall, and had to turn around on the second. I am at 104" WB, the blue TJ is at 100" WB(which is too short for this trail), the black all tube buggy(with the spare on back) is 110" WB, and the sic black rear steer buggy is at 112" WB.

I missed last weekends wheeling, so I was having serious withdrawls. My daughter and I went on Sat, and we wheeled a couple good trails with some buds. Here are a couple pictures and videos.

My 17 year old daughter started out on Highway 2 Hell, a 4.5 rated trail

http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn47/lancetkenyon/H2H%20UA%209%2027%2008/034.jpg

http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn47/lancetkenyon/H2H%20UA%209%2027%2008/041.jpg

As you can see here, the rear diff hung, and the fronts walked off the ledge. She got it wedged BAD, and took over to get it out without breaking anything. Needed a tug from behind to get it out, then I drove it through.

Good thing mine is left hand drive then!:D I have strict rules and conditioning to keep ALL body parts inside vehicles. Ask the guys I wheel with when they stick out a hand/elbow/foot what happens. They get a thorough yelling at.

Is that common to run them backward?? i have seen a few pics of american jeeps running them that way.. thinking of trying it, im guessing it suits rocks more? as i would guess mud would be the opposite (maybe wouldnt self clean as well backward)

In the rocks, when running them backwards, it helps to push you into the line, instead of away. Works well in sand both directions, same with loose dirt. As for mud....who knows, we only get 4" of rain here a year. These are the comp Claws, but I know a couple guys with the regular bias, and the radials who run them backwards too.

I will actually be redoing the steering, hopefully this week. I will post pics of the "new and improved" RK steering. I will be using a Teraflex passenger knuckle, with custom machined bushings to allow heims instead of TREs. Switching from a 4" drop pitman arm to a stock pitman arm, since the DL will be raised about 4" also. Drivers side knuckle will remain, and the TR will still be over the knuckle instead of under like stock. It will help in strength, since the Teraflex knuckle is stronger than stock, plus I can eliminate the add-on steel bracket as seen in the other pics, which has a tendency to crack if you do not set your steering stops correctly, which limits turning radius a touch, but not enough to worry about.

OK, so the Currie I ran for a long time was finally outgrown. It was time for a serious HD steering system for me. I got a used Rock Krawler Gen II from Renob, as the base for my steering. Much stronger than the Currie, and puts the stock stuff to a crying shame. The RK stuff is solid bar, and I personally, do not know ANYONE who is running it that has bent it. I knew I wanted something that would not require limiting my steering turning radius, and not rely on a bracket to hold it together to the stock knuckle. I have seen what Joe Daro from Absolute Offroad is running, and it seems to work really well, and is almost bulletproof. The only other future option will be hydro assist, but that at a later date.

What I did:

Replace passenger side stock knuckle with Teraflex knuckle.
Have custom spacers machined to accept 14 mm bolts and high misalignment heims, instead of TREs(no taper in the TF knuckle).
Used the RK TB and DL.
Replaced the 4" drop pitman arm with stock height pitman.

I think Joe at Absolute Offroad is going to be putting a package together that anyone(mostly anyone) with a little technical ability and the proper tools(standard hand tools) can install in their own garage if they want to. Of course, he will install if you do not want to.

The install of all the parts, including the tear down of the old stuff, took me about 3 hours. Could be done in 2 with air tools and a little more focus. The install was pretty straight forward, and there was nothing that seemed to go wrong, luckily. I did not get pics of the actual install during the stages, but just a finished product. I did it in 2 days, in which the first was raining, at night, in a messy garage.

Everyone knows the Currie is like stock on steroids, same setup, 3 times stronger.........

http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn47/lancetkenyon/broke%20and%20left%20behind/DSCN1416-1.jpg

The problem with stock and Currie(that drove me NUTS) is when you droop the tires or articulate BIG, the tires really tend to "toe in", due to the TR being a "Y" configuration.

This was temporarily fixed with the RK Gen II kit, while I waited on my TF knuckle and custom bushings to be worked out.

RK Gen II

Much improved steering, and way stronger. The only concern I have heard was the bracket had a few problems when not set up properly, causing it to crack or break. Still used 4" drop pitman, and stock passenger knuckle. Drill out knuckles and put TR on TOP of knuckles, basically a high steer set up.

http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn47/lancetkenyon/misc%20pics/061.jpg

http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn47/lancetkenyon/misc%20pics/057.jpg

New "semi-custom" Rock Krawler/Teraflex steering. Replace drop pitman for stock, replace passenger knuckle, custom bushings. True high steer, stronger knuckle, improved turning radius, DL over TR on separate arm, no add-on brackets to worry about.

http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn47/lancetkenyon/misc%20pics/023-1.jpg

I still need to replace the DL bolt, as the one I had was too short, so I had to use a longer one. I need to get an in between size with the proper nut, but this is adequate to wheel on until I can get a new bolt.

A huge thanks to Joe Daro, as he got me all the stuff needed to get this together, including the initial legwork on finding a guy to machine the bushings, and of course, being the guinea pig and testing it out for a couple months to make sure it was going to work.

And yes, she can drive pretty well, she should have stopped about a foot earlier, because you can see the guy at the top just starting to reach for the winch cable, but too late. Unfortunately, I was not spotting, I was actually videoing the whole time. A friend had my camera for the pics. I will get the vid posted as soon as my other buddy gets back from wheeling.

Smiling or grimacing. Not sure. Since I last visited, I have dropped in a built D60 rear. 35 spline chromos, spool, 5.86 gears, disc brakes. Building a front D60 now too. Gonna have a Detroit, RCV shafts, 5.86s, high steer, full hydro, coilovers. Moving into some 39-40" stickies with water in the fronts too.

Nice work Lance. Claws wouldnt have managed the hot tub climb.
Pic with the ice cap mountain in the background is killa.
8 lug front and 5 rear?
Did the FOA's need much tuning or fit and go? Like them?
You shelled out big time on the flame work. $12 :lol:

Junkyard build. 01 Dodge D60 from a diesel 1 ton. It had a CAD housing, but I got the first test set of RCV's new CAD elimination shafts(35 spline chromo inner, 33 spline 300M outers), new Spicer gears, new Spartan 35 spline locker, new Riddler diff cover, PSC full hydro steering, custom Lost Offroad Fab track bar(reversed from normal and much longer for better axle stabilization), stock outer knuckles, stock unit bearings(but new ones), stock dual piston disc brakes, full custom trussing and ram mount by Lost Offroad Fab, RK front links +7" longer.

I will be honest, we took an 8 hr drive to Moab for my shakedown run.....because it is easier than a lot of the AZ trails we normally run.

I love Moab, and have been there 4 times now. But for pure stupid hardcore trails, AZ has got to be tops.

Nice work Lance. Claws wouldnt have managed the hot tub climb.I have seen Comp Claws own that tub before.
Pic with the ice cap mountain in the background is killa. One of my favorites from the trip, thanks.
8 lug front and 5 rear? For now. I built and ran the rear D60 for a while before I built the front. I will be selling my rear D60 and building a 14 bolt soon.
Did the FOA's need much tuning or fit and go? Like them?I did a lot of weighing and measuring and research before I bought them. Got the valving almost perfect, and the coil rate choice is dead on too. With the stretch, and the width, and not much left of the front, I chose 175 over 250, and it is darn near perfect. Fast bombing down washes and dirt roads are smoother than they have ever been. Highway ride is very nice, and they flex really well too. Very stable. I love them.
You shelled out big time on the flame work. $12 :lol:I replaced my old hood and grill with a "new" grill(friend gave it to me), and my original hood that I had swapped out a long time ago. The grill was green, and I couldn't find any yellow paint that was even close. I decided to go totally different, and needed a way to tie it together. Taped out the flames in my garage, and bought $12 worth of Home Depot orange rattle bombs. Not bad for 2 hours, huh?
