Only recently purchased a Jk Wrangler and am going to join a Jeep club and do some offroading. Nothing serious just yet, will be leaving it stock.

Saw this kit advertised in Aldi catalogue. Don't usually buy their stuff.

What do people think:

No.

With recovery gear do not go CHEAP.

Think, was it worth that $3 chinese shackle failing and putting a shiny new hole in your Jeep/daughter/you?

Agreed that you get what you pay for, and stay away from that Aldi Winch.

Join your local Jeep club and get some advice from them. BTW the Melbourne Jeep Owners Club is holding the National Jeep Jamboree at the end of September, an excellent event to learn about all things Jeep.

Good luck with the new JK.

As much as it pains me to say this - just go to ARB or TJM or Opposite Lock to get your recovery equipment. Yes its expensive but you can't actually go wrong with any of these big name brands.

But before you buy anything make sure you familiarise yourself with what recovery points are on your JK (more to the point, what isn't on it). Few vehicles in australia come properly prepared for snatch strap recovery due to various laws and as a result aftermarket stuff is usually required.

Yeh saw the compressor:

http://www.aldi.com.au/au/html/offers/2827_13291.htm

How do you rate a compressor. Litres per minute, pressure?

Short answer: Yes.
Both, higher litres per minute and pressure means you wait less time to re-inflate after a run or an incident with a flat.

Go as cheap as you like here.

Search ebay for the ABR (not ARB) Sidewinder compressor.

I bought one of these ages ago and it was brilliant. Didn't have to run it for as long as the single cylinder compressors which meant less heat. Heat is what kills them eventually. My dad still uses it as I have an in car ARB compressor. Would pump up a 285/75r16 with a patrol sitting ontop of it from 15psi to 35psi in no time at all.

I was pleased with spending a few extra $$ on it over the cheaper Aldi style which is just a generic compressor from anywhere/everywhere.

Winch cable, those things can do some nasty damage to your hands if there are any stray wires. At least that's when I use the gloves.

I bought an Aldi winch to help pull down 40m trees I was cutting down. I ran it secured to another tree and standalone battery. As the tree came down, winch would slam down into the dirt from about a meter above ground and keep working month after month....

I put it through heaps of crap and it even survived the bushfires. I have no problem in recommending one - so long as you can live with a slow winch....

I've even used the supercheap shackles to pull the trees down.... no problem with them either.

My in law's Warn winch lived on thier 79 series for years. Fussy old grey nomads, checked it regularly 'to be safe'.... then it let them down when they needed it.

You don't always get what you pay for.

Not saying don't spend a bit more for quality.... just don't get ripped off spending too much on a name brand!!

There have been plenty of good stories of these on other forums (see here: http://www.4wdaction.com.au/forum/search.php?searchid=2763454).
I would probably go for the Tigerz11 myself but these are better than nothing if you have a tight budget....

Aldi
Tigerz
EWP
Smittybuilt
TMAX
Are all from CHINA.
If you want to buy a winch that will work for $300 worth of recovery, you should buy one of these.
If you think you may one day need to recover more than $300 dollars worth of Jeep I'd look elsewhere.......

Well, you could always carry 2 as spares at that price.....

I spent $400 on a 10000lb chinese winch as a stop gap measure 5 or 6 years ago dam thing still works have used it in anger 50+ times plus when dropping trees etc.I expected to get 12 months out of it and carry a hand winch as well if not in a group.

however it will be replaced with a warn 8274 when I find one at the right price or when the cheepie dies

When ordering my winch from the states I asked the dealer the M8000 for less than $600 or the Smitty XRC 10,000lb with syn rope and air for @ $700...

They sent me the warn and in their words, no diff $$$ wise, to them but they didn't want the warranty hassle with the XRC... Big diff in quality...

In the end you get what you pay for...

The warn landed at my door for @ $900... two weeks later... to get it here the best price I could find was @ $1750...

Can't remeber where I read it...

But the saying goes... "can't afford to be cheap"

Tigerz 12000lb with this handy tip on their website-
"THE WINCH CAN ALSO BE USED AS A HOIST"
http://www.tigerz11.com.au/images/gray_pic.jpg[/QUOTE]
I believe that has more to do with the braking setup. Hoists are not allowed to release the load in the event of a failure ie brakes should lock on.

Have a look below and think about the amazing differences between these products.
I spent 2 days in Mainland China this week and every wholesaler offered to label or brand the products with whatever I requested.
Coincidence?

The Ningbo looks exactly the same as my old Aldi winch.

I went to a manufacturing fair in mainland China a few weeks back and saw heaps of winches too. Amazing how competitive they are - hard to identify how reliable they may be.

Nothing to do with winches, I also saw something very interesting at the fair.... but it has a winch attached to it!
