yep, thats about right. there should be a metal tag attached to the diff cover bolts that have the ratio stamped on it, amongst other things like serial number, oil type etc.

or jack up the rear and rotate the tail shaft and count how many times it takes to turn the wheels one revolution

You learn something new every day. A mates 99 TJ has a 3 speed auto with 3.73 in it.

I think Japanese market ones were 3.73s, but unfortunately mine was NZ new = 3.07!

3.07 are the worst thing about Jeeps, re-gear while you can.

i would love too but sadly at the moment i just cant afford, i blew my budget on the stroker by a LONG shot.

ill regear in the future though, and when i do.. ill add a front locker.

You'll be up for another rear locker in the future as well then. As i under stand it there is one for 3.92 and numerically higher and one for 3.73 and numerically lower.
Just depends if you'll be happy with 3.73's in the future i guess, how big a tyre are you planning n running?

True but you can however get "Thick" gears to suit the RD117 which is made for 3.73 gears and down.

It's a hard call who to go to for fitting as if you have any issues it's a lot easier to hit up ARB.

does anyone know the maths on how to work it out?

crown wheel x _______

Crownwheel teeth divided by Pinion teeth = Ratio.

eg. 41 Crownwheel teeth divided by 10 Pinion teeth = 4.10 Ratio.
