Oil Cooler Coolant Flow Question

I checked a couple of my tafe automotive books & they show the water flow (generic petrol or diesel) as entering the block first, travelling up through the heads then to the underside of the thermostat & out to the radiator. So coolant would enter the oil cooler from the block then travel upwards towards the heads/turbo/heater core etc then back to the thermostat. This direction of flow would also help to remove any air pockets after cooling system work.

Yep I reckon your right Jeeper6, I thought the same but was hoping not so, pretty sure it does flow from block to cooler then out via the rubber pipe, I was thinking if the other way an extra cooler could be fitted, stumbled on the petrol layout which is pretty similar .............. WSM is about as clear as mud regarding the diesel but does mention the flow for the petrol.

Earlier post I got the pages for Petrol engine mixed up with the diesel, seems oil flow is different where on the diesel the oil flows from pump to cooler then filter but petrol runs filter first then cooler....

WSM Diesel quote; "The oil filter/oil cooler housing is mounted on the left side of the engine block.
Oil is circulated from the oil pump through oil/water cooler to the oil filter to the oil gallery feeding the
timing chain tensioner, cylinder head, oil jets, crankshaft bearings, rod bearings and the turbocharger.
The maximum oil temperature measured in the oil pan under continuous operating conditions should not
exceed 135° C (275° F). The oil cooler maintains a maximum oil temperature of 140° C (284° F).
The right cylinder head supplies oil to the timing chain oil jet, cam bearings, vacuum pump, and fuel
injection pump.
The left cylinder head supplies oil to the timing chain oil jet, and cam bearings."

Unlike the petrol no mention of coolant flow...........

We all know about the Coolant Hose on the oil cooler................ which way does the coolant flow ?? from Cooler into the rubber hose or from the rubber hose ????
Just one of those thought bubbles that may answer some other questions I may have in the future.....................

My thoughts would be flow in to the cooler from the block / mount then out through the hose...being there would be better flow in to the cooler...I could easily be wrong too...
