Default Plasti-dipped my bonnet.

As most of you probably saw from the bullbar thread I decided on the weekend to plasti-dip the raised section of my bonnet. I'd always liked the look of the US renagade and was trying to immitate that. Thought I'd share my experiences for anyone else thinking of doing the same. I've never used plasti-dip before so was pretty nervous but keen to give it a shot. I can always peel it off if I don't like it... so they say.

This is what I was shooting for...

I started out by marking out the line I wanted to follow. I just used masking tape. I was really worried about how the lines were going to end up so spent some time trying to get it as good as possible

All taped up and protected, was pretty nervous spraying that first layor on my baby.

This is after 3 coats. I ended up doing about 5 total. You have to wait about 30 minutes inbetween each coat. I was standing on the bullbar over the bonnet trying my hardest to get nice even sweeping layers.

After the last coat I only let it sit for about 10 minutes and then started to take the marking tape off. The plasti-dip dries ontop of the tape so I ended up taking a small new stanley knife and scoring the plasti-dip slightly to help. This was the longest, hardest part. Trying to get a nice line without pulling off all the dip or slicing up your bonnet. It only got harder as I went and by the time I reached the last 1/4 the dip had really started to set. The rounded corners were my worst but I knew they were going to be covered by the car bra most of the time anyhow

And here is the finished product. Took about 1.5 cans total. I also had bought the plasti-dip glossifier can but decided I liked the matt-textured look more so didn't end up using it.

It certainly isn't perfect, but I'm pretty happy with the result. I can notice some slight discoloration in areas where I'm guessing I struggled to get nice even sprays. I was just spraying direct from the can after all. Wondering if it might even out over time

And the end poser shot. Now what to use the rest of that second can on.....

Default Plasti-dipped my bonnet.

Mate, that looks fantastic. With your extra spray you could do the Jeep badges and decals.

Off topic, but I had the JK in the shop on Fri when you were getting your bull bar and winch.

The colour match came up awesome. A great looking rig. I am biased on the Deep Cherry Red though!!!!

WHAT! Cover my shiny bling, blasphemy I tells ya!

It's funny, Stu and I were comparing yours to mine and even though we KNEW they were the same paint codes yours just looked darker to us. Just funny how the different lines of the vehicles can play tricks on your eyes.

I can understand the bling, especially with that grill and headlight surrounds.

Not sure re colours. Maybe you wax more than I do and there is more light reflecting, making it look lighter?

Either that or its a Jeep thing!!!

Your bumper matches well regardless.

The only other way I have seen the tape pulled once dry was to use a cigarette lighter to heat it as you pull the tape.
