They introduced a design rule in the US that fuel tanks had to be in front of the rear axle, that's why they put a dodgy fuel tank that took up half the boot space in the later Monaro's.

I looked at one in a yard that didn't have the badge near the shifter, I assume QDII will have a wiring harness going into the diff housings? Is that the best way to tell???

If its only when braking I'd say the discs need to be machined. How many km's has it done?
I have heard of over tightening wheel nuts causing the hub to distort but I'm not convinced.

I don't expect it to be as good off-road as the Patrol but I figure with a lift and tyres it should get...

The digit in the VIN represents model year, not calendar year.
So yes, a MY2009 can be built in calendar year 2008 and it will have a VIN ending in 9xxxxxxx.
