Had this problem .. the field winding should have flagged a code (Field Winding Error) if the windings were the prob. As there are no codes stored, it's off to replacement diodes n bushes (rebuild)....

The regulator is controlled from the PCM - there is a connector with 2 wires from it on the back of the alternator.
The pulsing is usually caused by one of the field windings or diodes being faulty...

This would make the water flow incorrect and possible result in the problem you are having as not enough water flows...

Does it have a Crank Sensor on the flywheel (plate) - if this is the case, then turning it will put the timing out?
This is why some have the flywheel (plate) keyed to a certain mounting location.
