Default Gears Crunching

Hello,

I just recently reached 100,000ks on my wrangler 02, and lately the first and 2nd gears are slighty starting to crunch. It doesnt happen all the time but theres something Defanitely not wright.

Has anyone had the problem before and what are my options to get it fixed?

sounds like synchos to me.

i reckon first of all you should change your gearbox oil and see if it helps out.

if that doesnt work out, start investigating clutch, gearbox etc

When was the last time you changed your G/box oil?

If it was a while ago, or never. Drop the old oil and check for metal shavings etc...

If there aren't any shavings in the oil, it's probably going to be ok.

When you purchase the new oil, do some research first as TJ's like a specific type of oil.

Most guys I know use Redline or Penrite, but there are others.

is it just a matter of un screwing the plug at the bootom of the gearbox, draining it and then filling it back up again..

Is there a specific type of oil wrangler like better or work with better.
U mentioned redline or panrite, can you be a bit more specifiv cause theres heaps of options out there.

mine was doing this a little while ago - sometimes it owuld grind in second... other times it would be fine - now its totally cactus... i am replacing my gearbox because i dont want to get this one rebuilt.

I hate to "jump to conclusions" but i have a funny feeling you could be heading the same direction. I would find some other oil - see if that helps

as for draining the gearbox - pretty simple... get it warm (not hot... otherwise you will burn yourself) which helps the fluid flow... then drain it out (before you drain it... make sure you can get the filler plug open ) and once its empty... fill 'er up again.

As for fluid - im not sure, i run Redline oils (MT90) which seemed to do the trick up until mine shit a miata.

What are you looking at for your next gearbox Will?
Mine has not wanted to change from 1st to 2nd for a while, not grinding but no changing, also when mine gets hot from a long drive it feels weird on every change.
I was thinking about a engine/gearbox change (chev or toyo v8 ) as its not that much more $$$.

Matty - i am going for the NV4500. http://www.nv4500.com.

It's dimensions are very close to the NV3550 (similiar length but a bit taller). However - it is a million times stronger. GM use this in their V8 utes in America, so it will handle a V8 should you decide to put one in.

Wooders Garage helped me locate one (and all the pieces that go with it... new bellhousing, pipes etc etc) - he is in the process of having it shipped across to him at the moment.
