You will need to upgrade axles to at least D60 standard. However not all States will allow a gvm upgrade even when this is done. Best to check with relevant authorities in your state.

I have read here on AJOR that airbags, shocks and springs is enough to upgrade a JKU sport GVM by 300-400kg.

The rubicon already has stronger axles than a sport.

I think whether it's a 2 door or a 4 door makes a big difference because of the less stable wheel base on the 2dr when braking

Isn't it also to do with the ability to be able to stop with a heavier weight. You may need to upgrade brakes to what they have on the Grand & Commanders, a double piston set up with a larger surface area on the pads as well. The axles on a Wrangler Dana 44 are extremely strong more so that Ford Falcons and Holden Crumpledores.

The JK rubicon D44 might be rated slightly more than the D30 but its not really stronger because it still has the same weak C's and tubes. The D44 used in the front of an old full size or F100 is a very different D44.
But really the discussion online is moot - you nerd to talk to the engineers you wsnt to signoff on it and ask them what they want as it will likely differ not just State2State but also between different engineers.

GVM upgrades are done as a second stage manufacture at the federal level and receive a new compliance plate. It needs to done before first registration to be recognised nationally otherwise if done to a vehicle that has already been registered it is only legal in the state it was certified in. You can't mix and match parts or do it yourself it is a package that must be installed by the second stage manufacturer or their agent.

No one has registered a GVM upgrade for the JK with the Feds and this is the only legal way to change the GVM for a light vehicle. If you want to know more check out the federal department of infrastructure website or Google 'RVCS'

What people are saying here is right. We recently looked into a GVM upgrade for a customer on another make vehicle and the best way to do it is pre-registration. The dealer sends the vehicle to an authorised GVM upgrade installer, who installs the modifications and a compliance plate, and it is returned to the dealer for registration. Each GVM upgrade must be applied for by the installer to the supplier of parts, and only certain brands/kits are approved. We had to submit quite a lot of paperwork to get approval to do this using Ironman product, and kits are available for a limited selection of vehicles.

Suspension is one of the modifications required, the next limiting factor is usually axle rating, so a suspension only upgrade will only get you 200-300kg of extra GVM.

It can be done post registration, but requires engineering and is a little more complex.
