Default 2.5L VM Turbo diesel Glow plug power question

Hi Everybody.
I was just wondering if anyone knowns if there should be power going continuasly to the glow plugs when the car is running??
as mine appears to have power going to them from when the key is turned on to when it is turned off.

i have a 99 XJ Cherokee 2.5l VM Diesel

doesnt seem quite right so i thought i would ask.
shouldnt they only glow for a few second then stop heating??

Thanks
Nathan

I think they should glow for 1-1.5 minutes after starting then power should stop. I am not 100% on this though.
I have seen a thread here somewhere about just that.
Deazelweezel will probably reply & DXJ might too. They would know.

Eddy is absolutly correct!

This process is called past glowing, all modern engines do this to increase cold start engine run.

Permanently glowing plugs won't last very long. The circuitry for this glowing process is built in into the relay. That makes them so expensive.

found the glowing issue and is all sorted out, it was the main glow plug relay the real expensive (the one mounted in the engine bay all on its own), luckily i have a few spares,
now just wait for the glow plugs to show, then it will ready to fire up in the cold winter mornings

thanks for the advise deezelweazel

As far as I know the glow plugs are on until the glow plugs light inside the car is on .
The relay is probably a relay with an inbuilt electronic timer that times out
after 10-15 seconds and turns off 12 volts supply to glow plugs.
Not 100% on my logic because my xj diesel did not give me any problems in 1 and 1/2 year since i've got it.......so far.....after i fixed everything of course.

According to the manual-I skipped the chart...:

Pre–heat is the amount of time the glow
plug relay circuit is activated when the ignition (key)
switch is ON, but the engine has yet to be started.
Post–heat is the amount of time the glow plug relay
circuit is activated after the engine is operating. The
Glow Plug lamp will not be illuminated during the
post–heat cycle.

Hope that helps...
thank you, Mudmonster
Good to hear you are proceeding!
