Changing the whole shaft setup to aftermarket - which thankfully does include "proper" circlips certainly solves the clip issue, however is it really necessary as opposed to fixing ( machining ) the original parts and fitting decent clips ?

All the breakages seem linked to the original E clips and joint bearing cap
issues.

I suppose that with aftermarket bits its fast... pop out the old - in with the new and its done. Still i'm interested in the fundamental strength of the stock bits........

Superior Axles, grabbed the Evo Series set.

just machining the stock cir-clip wont help with this either.

I strongly do recomend not using cromo axles with the stock center, it will be *destroyed in seconds*
and yes i do realise the center is more than likely the fuse, i can live with having a few large failures over many many small painful diff failures.

a spare Uni wont help this

Stock d30 carrier, spider gears have many cracks and are in fact rounded, couldn't turn this by hand.

Thanks that's exactly the sort of info i'm looking for.

As i've got a Rubi the 44 front should hold up a bit better and those with locked 30's might also be less prone to the sort of spider gear failures you have shown.

What where you doing when you did the damage shown ?

Well here's my opinion on why the JK's are breaking axle's and uni's especially in 4L, what does the JK have in 4L that the TJ doesnt?? The brake lock diffs.

Think about it a wheel gets a bit of spinning happening while under power then gets clamped off outside past the uni joint by the brake caliper while still under power, that would cause a massive shock load on the components on the particular side, the harder the the throttle the bigger the shock load.

Also dont forget when one wheel is held stationary the spider gears cause a higher gear ratio effect increasing the required power and loading to drive the opposite side.

In a way a front locker would help the center issues as well as the uni issues to a fair degree as driven sensibly you probably eliminate 90% or so of shock loading.

Does that make sense?

there is a difference between the Dana's in the TJ and JK too so cant compare too much (atleast thats my understanding of it)
