It might help to know that the XJ Classic did not come with a rear Limited Slip Diff in Australia. Jeep were having supply problems at the time in the USA so in order to maintain the price and make up for just fitting a plain open diff they gave the Classic a bit more fruit.

The up market Limited did not come with factory underbody protection either and from memory it did not have the Up Country suspension fitted either.

My pick would be a 1998 onwards update XJ Sport fitted with Jeeps Up Country Suspension pack. This update Sport model gained an extra 25mm of clearance over the previous model too.

Good luck in your search.

if we were back in the day, i would agree, but since it is likely the LSD would be flogged or not far from it, suspension will be sagged and armour ?? what under body protection? I wouldn't bother as you will likely put a new locker/LSD (dont bother with the factory trash lock), new suspension and any armour (if any) could be picked up cheap from a wreckers.

What do you plan to do with your XJ or Grand once you own it? Chrome wheels and lowering for city streets, or lift and armour for off road action?

I have a 96 sport and most major mechanicals are the same except for the diffs as noted below
I bought as low a KM's truck as I could afford(160,000 for $5000)
I have a lot less general problems than a mate with a 300,000 Km 96 model
Get a Limited over a sport if you could as you will normally ditch the suspension anyway as the Jeep bug bites you
I find the adjustment on the limited seats in a mates truck gives a better driving position than mine, and the leather is nice......
