Mine was corroded and broken and had the same symptoms

Cheers

Hi,

No, Jeep replace the whole clutch hydraulic system.

You should be able to check the spring if there is just some small freeplay in the clutch pedal. If the clutch pedal can be moved backward significantly then spring may be no good.

I pulled it apart and fitted a new spring.
I think TJ master cyl can be fitted but haven't tried it myself.

Best to check if the spring is toast before buying anything. Could also be something wrong with the clutch itself?

Cheers

Grab yourself a copy of the parts manual from the greatlakes site and then you will know what parts are seperate and the part numbers...

Default XJ 2.5 TD - Clutch

Hello,

My clutch master cylinder completely crapped last year (return spring stuffed and oil leaking out rear seal into cabin footwell area).

As mentioned above Jeep indicate that the master cylinder is not serviceable and is replaced as a system (master cylinder, connecting pipe and slave cylinder all connected and filled with oil).

In my case I could not get a replacement clutch system for the XJ. With help from Dave at Wooder's Garage, I got hold of the clutch system from a TJ wrangler which has the same master cylinder and slave cylinder. I attached the master cylinder and slave cylinder to the connecting pipe from my XJ (after flushing with clean oil) and reinstalled. The clutch hydraulics in the XJ are self bleeding. Also with the TJ master cylinder you will also need to change over the clutch interlock micro switch.

In addition to the good advice mentioned above, Dave at Wooder's Garage was most helpful in supplying parts and helping out with the above info.

Hope all goes well.

Regards
jtc

Thanks guys for your Advise. If i need a new master cylinder there is one on e-bay for 300 & a slave for 200. See how it looks when i pull it apart.
I have been in other TD XJ's & they all had play in the clutch pedal. Must be a common characteristic.
