My CRD is currently under 10lts per 100km, all stop/start city driving..

Sorry loric, but for the 2.4 litre 900kg is the BRAKED towing limit. As with all vehicles in Australia 750kg is the UNBRAKED limit.

yeah - that's the snookered comment. I found that reference in the DOT doc.

makes me wonder - pretty much every regular 6x4 trailer with gravel in it will be outside that limit.

True - which means that everyone towing a trailerfull of gravel is actually breaking the law.

There was one landscape material yard in SA I went to which refused to sell me the amount I wanted because it would take the trailer over the 750kg limit, but most yards couldn't care less.

Thanks - yes - Only one choice then - need to trade up. Think we will go for the 3.7L V6 over the 2.8L CRD.

I will be towing a 2 ton load for a total of about 400km a month and then city driving maybe 1,000km a month max with some occasional offroad (maybe brisbane to Fraser once a month).

With this small mileage seems the V6 petrol is best? Although most on this forum think its underpowered vs the CRD. Any recommendations?

Honestly, If you want to tow 2 ton, 400kms per month, I highly recommend you get the CRD. If you maybe were 5-6 times a year towing the V6 would be fine, but if every month 400km of towing 2 ton... the Diesel.

Best thing to do, is go test drive BOTH,,, see if you can tow with both... then make your desicion. Drive up a few hill, and see what you think.

I agree with cmohr - I've just done 2400km pulling a 1.3 tonne trailer behind a 2.8CRD and I sure wouldn't want to have done it with a 3.7 petrol. Plus I find the 2.8 is easy to drive to work on a daily basis.
