Default Cost to replace front disc pads

My Commander had it's 70k serviced today. There's an oil leak appearing between the engine and the transmission hidden under the sump guard that i spotted and has been there for many services which is a warranty issue but what really shocked me was the cost to replace the front disc pads. $701 for 2 sets of pads and a rotor disc machine, you've got to be joking. What an absolute rip off! At least the Dealership phoned me first to ask if I wanted the job done. NO WAY! I think that's what the audience told The Angles in one of there songs.

A quick check of disc pad prices on various USA web sites ranged from US$44 to US$100. Changing pads is such an easy job so whys it cost so much? It's still works out cheaper buying new front rotors instead of the machining quote I had.

Has anyone else done their own pad replacement on a Commander or Grand if so where did you buy your new pads, locally or O/S? What compound did you decide on, standard OEM's or the ceramic type? Any tips on this matter would be appreciated.

There are also good step by step instructions on the USA Jeep Commander website on how to change the pads.

I'll be taking my Jeep to Redlands 4wd this Friday for a few minor things (front recovery hooks and Electrical Rust Control). I'll asked them about a price to replacing the pads and rotor.
I've also notice that USA prices are way cheaper than local dealer prices for parts. (standard rims $1,200 AUS vs $405 USA)
It may be cheaper to import the part and get a local 4wd specilist (Westside 4x4 or Redlands 4WD) to install it.

I paid a bit over $200 a set for OEM front pads at 80,000k. My mechanic recommended the using originals as others he had tried didn't perform well on the Commander. I figured getting 80k out of them, with the rear yet to be replaced at 93k it wasn't too bad.
