Richo,

You must be a dab hand with the BFH because your 360 is one sweet sounding motor. I'm keen to give the 360/727 a try in the dirty old 8 - could I please borrow the BFH?

I'd do a stroker build again or help someone do one, but would do a lot of things differently next time, even basic stuff.

The Jeep was off the road for two months but the actual working time would have been less than two weeks. Doing it in winter was stupid because the days are so short. Doing it out in the open made it even more stupid due to the rain. The circus tent I ended up with sort of worked but I had to take it down even in a mild breeze which meant I either rushed stuff, stopped work or got soaked again. Hence the backyarder comment - it was a very amateurish setup and I had absolutely no idea what I was getting myself into.

I reckon if a 4.0 or 4.6 was all lined up ready to go in, it would get done much quicker in late summer. That is, unless you had access to a nice big well lit workshop with heating.... mmmmmm!

The whole project took from August last year because I saw a cheap half gutted XJ and grabbed it without really having a plan. It then lay derelict for months, collecting rainwater and spiderwebs, making the back yard look trashed while I figured out what to do with it.

It would be cleaner and cheaper to collect all the small parts needed - computer, loom, fuel pump etc, plus any go-faster bits like header and FIPK, in advance. They're easy to store and don't leer ugly at you every time you step out the back door.

Then, with a complete kit of extras go buy a fresh 4.0 or stroker assembled long block and do it in one hit. I spent a lot more on core build than I probably needed to as I spec'd just about every component and internal dimension that could be changed. I learned a lot, but at the end of the day I doubt the difference in performance against a quality over-the-counter motor from a good seller (with a warranty) would justify the extra.

Gildo and Maz - I'm here to help. Either of you know a good divorce lawyer??!!!!!!

Gildo,

Nah. Just kidding...... she's happy I'm having fun working on my Jeeps, even if she can't quite see the point to it all, aside from it being (for her) a fairly time-effective way of keeping a male sane, sober and subjugated.

I need to take a break for a bit but yeah I'll help if you're serious. What goes round comes round - I had lots of help from a nice fella we both know...there's only two problems. 1) You gotta do the wrenching yourself, it's part of the fun so you need to move back to sunny Mexico and 2) it's probably cheaper just to buy another Jeep (no, I'm not exaggerating).

JCVSoDakaMrF,

Gen 3. Yeah I do like the idea of that as it combines V8 fun with FI smarts but honestly don't know the first thing about them.

Given you'd be putting one in TJ, would you be wanting to stay emissions-compliant and get it engineered? With the older stuff I guess it's not such an issue; the 360 is the cheap and cheerful way.

I'll try to get a vid clip going with my crappy little digi camera - if the sound comes through ok I'll post it up.

Ok first go at cliiping in a YouTube file. It's not a long clip but you get the idea of what it sounds like at about 1/3 - 1/2 throttle........
