Been talking to two chaps over the last few days that both confirmed that they had swapped the 249 out for the 242 out of the 97 on XJ (has the .840in output back into the trans and the wire placements etc are all the same too). Only thing that required changing was the front cv driveshaft needed to be swapped out for the front one off an XJ also (mines already done). The shift lever apparently needs a tweak (see "bend"). You can leave the shift display in, just remember all the way foreward is 2-hi, all the way back is 4-lo. As for dash display, pull out the indicator panel on the centre of the dash, unplug the red wires and plug together the black wires.......

Apparently it really is that simple.

I'll find out soon

I'm inclined to agree with you wooders. It hurts as it's cost me well over $1000 in parts to try and stay with the 249, in an attempt to hold original but I've had enough!
Please can anyone give me some leads as to where to start looking for an alternative?!

If you can hang out for a few more weeks, im getting a 242 from a 97+ XJ(as ive already mentioned on this thread)
Ive had the earlier 242 apart this week, and they definately need a change of input shaft, and Ive pulled out my old TJ 231 from under the bench, and that too needs changing. As the link I posted earlier re the different cases suggested... the 97+ XJ one fits without having to open the case.

If youve still got the front CV driveshaft, that may need changing.

I'll have mine here next weekend, Ill keep you posted.

All 242's from AW4 auto XJ's fit. Mines from a 96 model and is for sale as of today. Pull your 249 and compare the inputs.

Hi shado.... Im not saying the earlier one wont fit. With .750/19mm shaft they are slightly shorter than the .840/21mm in the 242, so yeah.. Therefore, sure they will fit, and be a tad short. I just want the correct one.

I doubt 2mm is going to make a difference, but Im fussy like that.

How did you go Mark? when you say earlier 242, what year? I think all 95-98 242's have the exact same as the 96-98 249's
I put mine in 3 years ago and the inputs were exactly the same.

Gudday mate, I havent yanked mine out yet, (too much of a pussy to lay on the bloody cold concrete to do it after work) but i do have the replacement for it. The output shaft is 22mm on it, and the two other 242's ive looked at (and could have got one for free) were 19mm, one from a 94 XJ limited, and the other from a date that has long since been forgotten. The one I have for the replacement was tagged feb 1997, out of a 2000 XJ.
Hopefully I'll pop the 249 out tonight.

On a completely different note, did you have a swing out carrier/custom rear bar on your wagon?

Cheers
